Sun Container [ Link ]
French student Florent Bouhey Fayolle designed this "sun container" to collect energy from sunlight during the day and warm the air when the temperature cools. It is not yet for sale, but it is encouraging to see elegant green innovations like this one being designed. I hope we will see more portable solar technology like this in the future.

Crane Space Heater, 600/1200 Watt - $34.99 [ Link ]
I love the retro curves and chunky dial of this petite heater from Crane. Some reviewers warned that the unit gets quite hot to the touch, so don't use it around children or pets. It could be just the thing to get your master bedroom or home office nice and toasty, though.

scarbowcow I've got an unheated hall that has damp walls (has had for more than 10 years; landlord won't do anything about it). I had an oil heater in the hall to keep the wall warm and keep it from growing mold, but it gave up the ghost (landlord won't provide another). I bought the cheapest space heater from the supermarket (heating element and fan), and I'm astonished by how quickly it heats up a whole room. Much more efficient than my wall-mounted steam heat and that electric oil radiator. I paid about $15 and am very happy with it.

freyafoust We are on year 3 of rarely using our forced air furnace. Between day lighting, insulated drapes and recapturing heat generated inside the house we rarely need it. We keep a radiator type space heater in the living room we turn on at night or in the morning if it gets cold. I have a small fan heater to take the chill off in my office. We also run it to warm up the downstairs bathroom. The bathroom is toasty warm in a few minutes.

freyafoust Actually I live in South Dakota. I grew up in Minneapolis, it is way colder here due to the terminal north winds. It can be done in northern climates if you have a well insulated house and properly placed windows. So far this year the only times we have turned on the furnace was when it was going to be -10F for an extended period of time. If it is only going to get to the teens at night and was at least 20F during the day we don't need any heat at night. It might get down to 54-60F in the house by morning but between the space heater and morning activities it is warm enough in less than an hour. I think people find this so hard to believe because they have been convinced otherwise. Take baby steps to cut your heat loss or lower your thermostat. The key seems to be having a well insulated house and either southern or east/west big windows. Everything in our house is contractor grade and it was built about 2001. Insulated drapes make a huge difference in keeping heat in.
