If you want to use orange in your kitchen but aren't loving the bright orange hues touted here, try looking for light orange colors that have some yellow or brown in them — they will have a mellow vibe without looking too pastel.

Some of my favorite oranges (clockwise from top left):

1. Waves of Wheat 095-4, from Mythic Paint
2. Sweet Orange 2017-40 from Benjamin Moore
3. Tangerine Dream 123-7, from Pittsburgh Paints
4. Sunbaked Orange GLO08, from Glidden
5. Baby Carrot 8-11, from Pratt & Lambert
6. Autumn Blaze 2002-1A, from Valspar
7. Montana Dust AC212-5, from Kelly-Moore
8. Cayenne SW6881, from Sherwin-Williams

This is a vibrant shade of pure orange, but because it's not the main color in the kitchen and the remainder of the palette is light and neutral, it draws your eye to the interesting custom shelving and cabinetry.
by Danny Broe Architect
That's not to say that orange can't be paired with other colors. Blue is a good choice, because it's opposite from orange on the color wheel. The two colors offer the most contrast to each other, so they make a bold, high-energy combo. When working with complementary colors, I like to make one the bolder hue and let the other serve as a lighter, background shade. The intense carrot color here looks fantastic against the sky blue island in this kitchen.
by Muratore Design + Construction
A bold orange accent hue is a great way to tie various wood tones together. These woods have some orange in them, which gets picked up by the vibrant orange backsplash tile and accent wall color. By turning up the volume on the orange hue used here, it really stands out while still working in harmony with the wood. The effect is rich and warm — perfect for a home in a colder climate.

Here's another fantastic bright orange backsplash. The remainder of the palette in this kitchen is clean, light and neutral, with lots of white and stainless steel, so the red-orange backsplash and refrigerator really stand out.
by Kingston Design Remodeling
One more beautiful attention-getting orange backsplash — this one has a more traditional feel due to the handmade quality of the backsplash tiles from Waterworks.
by Dyna Contracting
I love how a touch of orange delineates this elegant kitchen in the open-plan space.
by Ellen Cassilly Architect
Gray continues to be a popular neutral, and it serves as a nice cool contrast to the fiery orange hue in this beautiful modern kitchen.
by Mark English Architects, AIA
If you are drawn to orange but are leery about committing yourself to orange cabinetry, backsplash tiles or appliances, consider using the hue in ways that are relatively inexpensive to change later on, such as painted accent areas in the kitchen. I love this papaya orange, but it would be very easy to repaint the walls.
by American & International Designs, Inc.
Or you can try using an eye-popping orange for kitchen furniture and accessories. This airy white kitchen can host any accent color. Just stick to one or two of your favorite bolder hues in a kitchen like this, so it doesn't get too busy.

Jess Dixon I painted my tiny little student apartment kitchen bright orange, just for fun. I had a hard time finding an orange that would come across as not a "halloween" orange...ended up realizing that you actually pick something that looks a little more yellow. Believe it or not, I just colour matched a piece of cardboard torn off of the box of my favourite tea!

Less charitable commentators have referred to as the colour of Kraft Dinner... or perhaps a nuclear sunset =)

JAN MOYER Having reached full blown adulthood and independent living in the seventies, replete with an orange wall in the living room, and orange and avocado plaid paper in the kitchen, and an orange poppy on the everyday dishes......may I just say as Jennifer Hudson would sing and belt..."I'm not goin..no no no no no I'm not goin...no no no" lol

amouw I love decorating with bits of orange. To add some interest to our all white kitchen, we added a little orange over the window as a focal point. It's "pumpkin pleasure" from Olympic. Feels like a little bit of sunshine and makes me smile every time I see it!

jrwquattro I love our orange accents in the kitchen. I'm sitting on an orange barstool as I write this and looking across the kitchen to our orange lockers.

lukeeladee I have plenty of orange in my home--it was done in 2008 and it gets lived in--sorry just snapped these --no staging for looks lol--the pumpkin above cabinets not really visible above stove but in dining area it has two walls that are darker shade--cabinets, floor and backsplash stay neutral in case I want to change colors

patricia beharry I think the right time to paint your kitchen orange, is if you wake up in the morning, look at your kitchen and say "I feel like painting my kitchen orange this morning" That IS the right time.

Dawn Fetty This is not for the faint of heart. After almost a month of trying to make a choice I THOUGHT I found a color that might work. I'll post photos of before, and after. Tell me what you think. My husband and frinds like it and I'm not totally trusting their comments. I was going into cardiac arrest while painting it and still not sure. This is Jalepeno from Sherwin Williams...I still think it needs to be toned down a bit.

katie32123 The kitchens are fabulous and I can admire them, and possibly wish for one, all from afar. Because I can tell you for sure that orange anything absolutely does not flatter my skin tone. Green, beige, brown, yellow, orange, gold all make me look positively ill.

And I have to agree with Jan....I'm not going back there! No, no, no, no, no! lol

lmcorreia We recently added orange by painting the little bit of walls in our kitchen. It's a custom color to match my pottery ware on display. It's fun, adds energy and ties the other colors together. Paint is a great way to be bold!

jeniecegoellner Got a lot of Orange in my Kitchen and it is fantastic. I do live in a coolerr climate and it does bring in warmth where the white and blue it was prior to our remodel kept it looking cold and sterile. I absolutely love the change and enjoy spending time in it every day.

bluegrassmama When renovating my kitchen a few years back I decided on Chivalry Copper for the walls... though my children came in saying "mama I feel like I'm in a pumpkin" I continued by adding black quartz counter tops and maple cabinets it all came together fantastically!!! I love adding color all throughout my home!!!

tingleys Just painted my office with silver fox, the accent wall is a beautiful orange called a real find. I am lovin it!

Amy Dorning I painted one wall of my old kitchen a vivid orange--I believe it was called "Tangelo Anna" from Kelley-Moore. I got so many compliments on that wall. The kitchen was in a 1929 apartment building in San Francisco and it really brightened and warmed up the space. I love orange, and have a few splashes of it in my kitchen now, but only accents.

patricia beharry @janicegoellner-------- Love love love your kitchen. I recently painted my little office orange. looks like the exact colour of your kitchen. Ihave a thermostat in that room and it reads 86 degrees. the bathroom right next door is painted white, the thermostat in that room reads 86 degrees. All my windows and doors are open, and the whole house is the same constant temp.no matter what colour I have on the walls. The only change I have in temp. is when the sun hits the western side if the house, and the rooms on that side is hotter and those are the room painted white. So in order to get a little cooler I retreat to the rooms painted orange and bright yellow. Now I know I'm no Einstein, and I am not going to be arrogant and put my credentials up, But what gives with this theory.

heidihausfrau Gotta laugh when I see this. 20years ago, when we moved into this house, the Formica counters were Brady bunch orange. 8 told hubby they would have to go as soon as we moved in. Lived with them for almost 9 years!!! They are gone now--could've stayed on the cutting edge if I would have kept them :)

cricketcat My kitchen with an orange wall in my Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) house, now sold. I loved it and would do it again.

curllee If you want orange, just get cabinets stained with Minwax colonial maple. Doesn't look much like "colonial maple", but it certainly makes your wood orange. In other words. . . stay away from this stain unless you really like orange stained wood.

davy1975 I love the warmth of this color. I went full-on in my small kitchen and everybody feels a groovy warm vibe when in this room.

messyann I have a country/casual kitchen with eat-in area and I painted it Laura Ashley's October Bronze and it's gorgeous. I never regret this bold and warm color and it goes with the blue, green and red I have as accents. I have oak cabinetry and big farmhouse table and woodwork in the house, and it mellows it out beautifully. Love it every day and have received many compliments over the years.

Home & Stone We featured two kitchens in this post on our Facebook page asking if people favored a heavy use of orange or just a pop of color. Bright and bold seemed to be the trend!

Linda.Linda2 Orange is my favorite. I just added it to one wall of my dining room and wow did it make a big difference.
I love bold colors and change them often but this time I think the orange will stay

beanwyo I'm still not finished with my kitchen, and not totally convinced orange (parrot orange from Ben Moore) was the right choice, but it sure grabs attention. I do like how the color changes through the day as the light changes though.

Dawn Fetty beanwyo....I think that works...because you are just doing that back wall...I did my whole kitchen and I think it was an overdose....but I do like your one wall done....it's just enough! :-)

Jack Powers Orange is a great accent. I have orange accents with dark blue and gray. Looks great. I don't like the comparison to the 70's. That was orange gone wrong! Most of the pictures utilizing orange here are beautiful!

Sheryll Lyn I would like advice on a tiny, galley kitchen (I have NO money) and the counter tops are formica in a dingy sort of dingy beigey, not quite yellow sort of thing. Any color I look at .. been trying to do the paint chip thing and am just going backwards. I guess I will keep the old cheap white paint walls.... white and cabinets are that fake, plastic coated junk (no money remember) , this was all here and in a state of disrepair when I bought this house...
I love my street, my neighborhood, and might love my house if I could 'get it' together cheaply with some paint. I love bright yellow, but it would just make my counters even more dirty, dingy looking...... any suggestions? Pictures please, cause I really need the visual.
Sheryll Lyn And the counters have little pen strokes of a dingy Turquoise also and I love Turquoise without fail. I am taking down a added dropped ceiling (talk about nasty) and also taking out the 48 inch fluorescent light thingy and putting back the old ceiling light (had to buy a cheap fixture for now.

Sheryll Lyn IF I could choose and had the money, I think I would like orange in my bathroom. I like bright colors in my bathrooms, it helps wake me up in the mornings........ grin, not that I need that now in retirement. Years ago I had some (what was called window pane) hand towels in bright purple, red, orange and I bought some solid orange towels and wash cloths and made a challis shower curtain in a weave that was like Monk's cloth in purple. This went in a pure white bathroom, beautiful white tiles (rental apartment) and everyone LOVED it.
