Harrison always imagined having a white kitchen but also had her heart set on using a particular shade of Tiffany blue. While she was waffling about whether to go for blue cabinets, Neithart suggested putting in a blue beadboard ceiling instead, in a more subdued shade of blue. After finishing the project, Neithart came across a photograph of Julia Child's Massachusetts kitchen, which was used as a set for three of her television shows and had cabinets nearly an identical shade of blue. As Neithart said, "Maybe Julia had something to do with it!"

Paint: Ceilings: Bali 702, Benjamin Moore; cabinets: White Dove OC-17, Benjamin Moore
by Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.
BEFORE: The original kitchen was a narrow galley-style space. With only one wall of cabinetry and the stove in the corner, the layout was awkward and storage was sorely lacking. The kitchen was almost gutted during the renovation, setting the stage for a more functional and open space.
-1.jpg
Neithart found these charming art prints in an antiques store. The three vintage prints were still in the original wrapper but had been damaged, so she had them restored and framed. The scenes of a woman doing her shopping with the local grocers reminded Neithart of Child.

This vintage 1950s Wedgewood stove belonged to Harrison long before she moved into the house, and it was an absolute must-keep item. Neithart initially tried to talk Harrison out of using it, concerned that the new cabinets would dwarf the petite vintage stove; but Harrison would not be swayed.

Cabinets: Charlton Cabinets

Now, after the stove has been fully refurbished and reinstalled, Harrison and Neithart agree it really makes the kitchen. It gives the whole kitchen a more authentic, charming feel, providing the perfect counterbalance to more modern elements, like the random-length Carrara marble backsplash.

Harrison had her heart set on these rich coffee bean–brown cork floors, even though they are more delicate than hardwood or tile. She loves the softness underfoot — perfect for getting comfortable in the kitchen while whipping up many meals and party dishes.

And speaking of party dishes, also on Harrison's wish list was a truly gigantic fridge and freezer. With their two teenage boys, three dogs and regular parties, the family has been putting this massive fridge to good use.

Floors: Cork; light fixture: Visual Comfort Cornice Hexagonal Flush Mount

Harrison adores entertaining. In addition to smaller family dinners, she regularly throws large parties, where the home's multiple sets of French doors are flung open, allowing as many as 100 guests to mingle both indoors and out.
-1.jpg
The countertops are black Ceasarstone, which is, as Neithart says, "bulletproof" — in other words, ideal for two teenage boys.

The glass-front cabinets are double-wide, and the couple ended up taking one set out to provide additional counter space and let the room breathe a bit more.
by Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.
One must for the kitchen was creating lots of space for Harrison's entertaining arsenal. Dishes, platters and glassware have finally found a home in the extra-tall cabinets. And because her husband is extremely tall, Harrison says she never needs a ladder when he's around!
by Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.
Neithart had the interior of the hutch cabinet wallpapered in a fretwork print from Schumacher, adding a beautifully decorative element and subtly tying in the ceiling color.

A capacious new sink with an elegant faucet makes washing up a more pleasant experience.

Faucet: polished chrome, Bridge Faucet w/ Sidespray, Perrin & Rowe collection, Rohl
by Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.
The only piece left mostly as is: a large butler's pantry attached to the kitchen. Now that all is finally finished, the kitchen seems to have a nice balance of old and new, vintage and modern.
by Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC.
And now for the big question: What would Julia Child have thought of her childhood kitchen now? Neithart laughs and says that at over 6 feet tall, Child would certainly have appreciated the tall scale of the kitchen. Also its simplicity and the fact that at heart, it is a really functional kitchen, meant to work hard and handle tasks without a lot of frills. Now that is something Child would have gotten behind.

jimzeichman Nice to see the vintage Wedgewood as the focal point of the kitchen. I'm sure they get a lot of compliments on it. Hard to tell but the fridge seems a long ways away from the prep areas. They might want to consider a vintage hanging light to replace the trendy one shown. Removing one of the glass door cabinets frees up a lot of counter space. Overall, a nice clean look.

kelmick I *love* this story and its overwhelming sense of kismet!! The kitchen is divine and that stove fits in beautifully. Is that a dumb waiter or a laundry chute in the butler's pantry? Either way, sooo appealing.

normpo I'm sure Julia Child would be right at home in that house. I loved the vintage stove and the pot filler. Those prints were great and that blue ceiling! I love color on the ceilings. I do have a white ceiling in my kitchen. My small pantry is brown with a green ceiling, the same green as my kitchen walls. My bedroom is blue with a khaki colored ceiling, my bath that's off of the bedroom is a dark olive green with the same khaki ceiling as in the bedroom. There are two nice windows that brighten up the room. My middle living room is a dark raspberry like red with a light silverish grey ceiling and my front living room is a gold with a subdued sunshiny yellow ceiling. I love color and those big blank white ceilings just scream at me to paint them a color! Well, back to this place, LOL, I love the kitchen and I imagine the rest of the house is beautiful as well. Thanks for the tour!

1stladydawn This is the first white kitchen that made me green with envy. Love the beadboard ceiling and that beautiful non-intrusive blue. bubblyjock What a happy-looking kitchen!

I think what makes it extra-charming in these photos is that it looks a well-used space: there are appliances and food out on the counter (shock, horror), unobtrusive vintage accents, and obviously personal items lying out in view.

Thanks for the post, Laura (and Charmean!). I had to google Julia Child's kitchen, which was fascinating (I'm not from the US) - I had no idea she cooked on a big ol' Garland (now Bluestar) range! Loved her peg-board walls with a spot even for her (his?) spectacles.

mcbriec I really like the blue ceiling made in beadboard which not only brightens up all that white, but also provides a vintage and textural addition. IMO, the ceiling is a fifth wall which is far too often ignored so it's really nice to see something creative like this.

johnandbrett This kitchen is a lot more livable than a lot of the ones on Houzz. It's not too big and it's not trying to overwhelm. In other words, very nice.

I wonder what Julia Child would have thought of granite counters.
johnandbrett Charmean - Did you take out the row of windows that we can see in the Before pic? Is that the wall where the stove is now? If so, that was courageous but I think it worked out. Windows are very nice but they can make it very difficult to design a workable kitchen.
Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC. Hi johnandbrett.

If you look in the before picture, where the lab is in the background...this is where the kitchen got bumped out to the left. The row of windows in the foreground in the old kitchen also got bumped out, but became the family room. If you look at the third to last picture that shows the sink, you will see the pass through to the family room. So it was an addition and remodel. I will be photographing the rest of the house shortly, stand by...more to come. Thank you for your interest, I appreciate your comments. Charmean

gcanty I can't imagine why they would call the Wedgewood a petite stove with 6 burners and at 300#'s
3 months ago ·
gcanty Sorry, I got posted before I was done! This kitchen and stove( and ceiling and cabinets and floor) are beautiful. I loved seeing the modern oven because my remodel will include our red restored O'keefe and Merrit and a modern oven. While i will happily use the ;grillivator' i do not want to get out the easy off at this point!!

There are several companies around the nation that restores the vintage. They almost all have sites. http://www.antiquegasstoves.com in Alto loma Ca. did mine though I bought it from a lady in Houston.
marleneshannon They truly are extremely heavy. I've had mine since my mother bought it new - it doesn't have six burners, but rather a griddle in the middle. I absolutely love it. I have checked thoroughly into getting a new stove, but unless you spend a fortune, they are only going to last about ten years. My Wedgewood, refurbished, will stay in my family for a long time.

halleycomet Mmmmmm!!!!!!!

One of those spaces that you can FEEL yourself in!!!!

Thanks for the notes on products and refurb for stoves---we "broke" our vintage stove trying to move it without enough manpower and I regret to this day (23 years later) that I didn't just move it ANYWAY and see if it could be fixed. Sigh. Still on the lookout for some other one I can love.

Was the beadboard for the ceiling just plain old sheets from the lumber yard or a special type? Finish? Paint? Inspired kitchen re-finishers NEED to know!!!!!

Actually the walls of my kitchen now are a slightly more Robins Egg than this but this was the color I was "aiming" for! But the reverse would give me MUCH more light--and cover up the TEXTURED CEILING in our 70's shoebox shape ranch. Who puts a TEXTURE ceiling in a KITCHEN?

kerryloves2travel Did you paint original cabinets with Benjamin Moore White Dove? Or did you buy new cabinets and paint them. Can you paint 80s oak cabinets white if prepared correctly?
normpo To kerry, yes you can paint those 80's cabinets white! Great idea. Paint them, get new handles and you can change the whole look of your kitchen for the cost of a few gallons of paint and the cost of new hardware. For more change you could ad a new backsplash under those new cabinets. I live in a 1910 victorian and I painted my old cabinets added new handles, put in new counter tops and I used pressed tin ceiling squares as a back splash. Cost me $50 and it looks like a million! I'm sure you could find some inexpensive ideas for a backsplash on this site. Go for it! LOL

kerryloves2travel Thanks so much! I need to change floor as Italian tile chipped & cracked (1989 Loma Prieta earthquake didn't help) & planned on backsplash & countertops. Like the layout I have so this painting option will save time and $$$.
Wedgewood stove stays & appliances all good. I am smiling!
normpo kerry, I put the floor in too! Got it from Home Depot. It's what they call a floating floor. It's long planks that just piece together, almost like toung and groove. I had an extra box when I was done so I brought it back and got a box of the darker color and used that as the counter tops. Then I just took strips of wood for the facing and painted it the same color as the cabinets. It cost me like $750 for the floor and new counter tops.
Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC. Hi kerryloves2travel.
These cabinets are all brand new with a fresh coat of paint. If you do paint your cabinets, make sure you find the best painter possible. It's not easy to make stain grade cabinets look good with a new paint job. Hope that helps. Charmean

Erika Bierman Photography I love this kitchen, the blue bead-board ceiling, the wallpapered hutch cabinet, the antique Wedgwood stove and the beautiful antique prints on the wall! It was such a wonderful surprise for me to photograph this space. I love how Charmean kept its authenticity with some modern elements. I think Julia Child would be inspired in this space to create some new classics!
Charmean Neithart Interiors, LLC. Hi dennajones. I agree. I should add for clarity that in an early drawing the stove was on the long wall about 18'. That is when I was concerned about the scale of the stove on that huge wall. In a revision, the stove was moved to it's current location which is a much better scale for the stove and also made it more of a focal point. The revised layout was much better, and yes the stove is the star, in my opinion. Thank you so much for your comments.

lynnag LOVE that stove! I bought a duplex in 1986 that had a big old stove in it. When I took possession the owner had removed it, saying it didn't work, and replaced it with a cheap little new stove. Wished I'd checked to see if it was in fact working. I think he sold it.
