The 6- by 6 1/2-foot nook now has a fresh new feel. A mix of cheerful green and warm natural tones creates an inviting space.
by Cristin Priest {Simplified Bee}
BEFORE: Built in 1940, Priest's home had the evidence of its era. The nook was originally outfitted simply with wooden benches and a Formica table (which had already been replaced when this photo was taken). "It was charming, but it needed a little facelift," she says.

The kelly green and white Thomas Paul pillow in the corner inspired the new color palette.
by Cristin Priest {Simplified Bee}
AFTER: Patent leather cushions look luxe but are easy to wipe clean. Priest chose something practical and durable for her kids but loves how the cushions add a shot of shine.

Priest had been admiring the Trellis Manuel Canovas wallpaper for some time and thought it could be applied easily and affordably in this small nook.
by Cristin Priest {Simplified Bee}
Artwork from her children and her grandmother adds a special touch. "I love the way it [the nook] feels," says Priest. "It's inviting, personal and full of life."
by Cristin Priest {Simplified Bee}
Here's the inspiration pillow in its new setting. The camellia tree just outside brings a dash of the outdoors into the nook. The butcher block tabletop, bamboo blind and warm orange inside the Arteriors pendant seem to play off the natural outdoor hues. White Pottery Barn Kids frames hold artwork from Priest's children.
by Cristin Priest {Simplified Bee}
Priest had custom pullout drawers built into the existing benches to help maximize space and storage. The new butcher block tabletop mimics the shape of the table's original Formica top.

typingmonkey This kind of thing is the best of what Houzz has to offer. I love real life, real spaces and especially diy transformations. Very nicely done.

Sigrid i wish the before photo had been taken with the same light. The pictures could have featured in an article about how to best photograph your house.

auntychacha Love that the sunflower picture was retained! Reminds me not to just throw and buy new when decorating. Well done to the owners!

Hils Visser For winning a dream kitchen..of 50.000 DLR....as a member of Houzz I like to take my chance...BUT...nope I'm living in Europe... the chicken I'll will make in that kitchen, don't have a globle mind....and yes for me it is still dreaming...Best regards from Holland

fredavancoller I must say it's the first time on houzz that the before picture looks better than the latter. The wallpaper will drive me cracy and patent leather looks cheap

olldbobbi I'm not a fan of green, but this is so very welcoming! Great job!

cherielou I, too, like this kind of feature. and I'd like to see more similar improvements on small spaces, not always high end everything. I think this nook is refreshing! And to the commenter who says the wallpaper would drive you crazy, who says you have to use this same wallpaper? You can be inspired by the owner's idea to freshen up the space. If you were to do something similar, you would pick the paper or paint that would please you. No need to be so critical.

patricia beharry Finally we are seeing more things from Houzz that an ordinary 'poor' person on a limited budget can try to do themselves.You sometimes get tired of looking at things you cannot afford. In this hard times it can make you a little depressed.

MAlps This is AMAZING!! Few changes and a whole new adorable and homey look!

olldroo I love the simplicity of the wallpaper and how the nook really fits in with the kitchen now. I always love green for it's freshness. Personally I wouldn't have chosen the patent leather, but can understand it is a sensible choice with children.

Gina Fitzsimmons ASID How timely! We have just finished this kitchen nook this week! We designed the cabinetry to coordinate with the client's kitchen and added the drawers, shelving and seating to make a perfectly proportioned nook ergonomic wise. The upholstery was made with 3" medium density foam with a Dacron wrap to make the seating comfy. The roman shade fabric was a more traditional print with yellows and teal. We had the coolest wooden bobble trim added to finish the edge of the shade valance. The clients husband Tom made the table! Way to go Tom!

Casart Coverings Sometimes I think it's even harder to design for yourself than for others. Cristin's results are bright and practical. BTW, Cristin's comments on quilted trends were included in Elle Decor's survey of designers and bloggers. elledecor.com/design-decorate/talent/trend-alert-quilted-bloggers#slide-1 Coincidentally, Cristin and I both had blog posts just a day apart on Elle Decor's article. http://www.casartcoverings.com/casartblog/quilted-from-head-to-toe/ and http://www.simplifiedbee.com/2013/01/quilted-trend-elle-decor-tastemakers.html#comment-9780

goatpro Thank you for giving us "real world" ideas. This is ideas for all of us. Beautiful, bright and cheery. Who wouldn't want to have breakfast in this space. LOVE the custom drawers, nice use of space,

Becky Harris Wow! I love seeing such a dramatic difference in the before and after. This is making me want to wallpaper my kitchen nook and add cushioned seats. Right now it serves as the spot that I confine my mess to!

agioni I love this. It is a great way to add the fun of wall paper w/ out it being overwhelming. I love the light fixture too. I think green is such an out of the box color.

PaintColorHelp.com Dallas Very cute. But I feel compelled to ask, what's wrong with a vintage home having "evidence of its era?" These homes included many standard features that today's builders would do well to include in theirs - such as breakfast nooks and telephone niches.

Francesca I love this! I don't have a home like this but I wish I had a nook like this. WISH! Oh well. The geometric pattern on the wall is not for me but I like the color...

Tom McCoy WAIT - now there's a kitchen, too! And a wall missing! And sunlight! FAIL...

JEANIE Pattern+ color+ artwork from the kids = a really fresh-as-a-day-in-May makeover. Just full of life and love. That is so apparent. GREAT feature. Thanks for sharing!

schmersalk Please(!) tell me what sort of fabric is on the bench? I am trying to figure out what is best for my banquette and am stuck... Love the idea of being able to wipe down easily. Please share! Thanks!

bruinette Like others, I like these inspirational ideabooks that don't need a millionaire's bank account to achieve. But I have to say that I also find the homes of the mega-rich who hired expensive designers are also useful as a source of ideas and inspiration for a look that I can achieve for my own home. It's a question of gathering ideas where otherwise my mind would just be a blank! I can then create a version that fits my own financial level, not the billionaire's!

Fresh Eyes For Your Home Great look and the nook really works as a little play/crafts/seating area for the kids-the patent/vinyl really gives them shine and works so well with the quiet wallpaper!

rsis As much as I hate to admit it, and aside from how it makes me cringe......yes folks, wallpaper is back!

Having said that, this room looks great! Pulled it off in every way.

I just can't get past the clock ticking away the short time before it's dated and I would have to scrape it off.
5 months ago · ·
Casart Coverings @rsis-You won't necessarily have to do any scraping! Today's wallpaper and wallcovering (yes, there is a difference) is not your grandmother's. Think no glue or paste. Think repositionable. If it's not just right, you can move it around. Think removable without taking your wall with it! For those who are green-focused, you can even reused it. But here is a caveat: not all repositionable wallcovering are alike.as this video demonstrates.

babylu I kinda like the before better than the after. I feel like the after is your everyday look. The before picture seems to be more brightened. Although I like the after too. But if I had to choose. I think I would go with the before.

frenchdecor Like it. Kids artwork!!! it makes me smile, isn't that a great morning? My first thought was "it's spring". This is my textile pallet for spring (green, yellow, white (sheers instead of draperies) fresh and breezy, lifts my spirit up.
@ Gina, roman blinds hanged lower than window's top, it's brilliant, so do I like the all nook.
@Patricia Beharry, I am agree, window shopping is enjoyable in smaller dozes.

Sheryll Lyn It is a very beautiful, refreshing makeover!

I first thought you did "Top Down Bottom Up" Roman Shades. I want them for my bedroom, but so much work and then the price of the hardware doubles. I wish my bedroom was facing my fenced in back yard, so I could just hang mine lower like you did in your breakfast nook.

Again, so lovely and refreshing.
