What Is a Signature Color?

Personal.
A signature color at its heart is a hue that is associated with you. Friends are reminded of you when they see "your" color, and a home feels more authentically you when it is woven in. Sometimes it happens accidentally, but you can also intentionally cultivate a signature hue.
by Caitlin Wilson
Consistent. Tiffany blue is not just any blue. It is instantly recognizable because it is always precisely the same blue-green shade. If you already have a favorite color, take a moment to consider exactly how to describe the color you love — it's not just "pink" but "magenta" or "bubblegum." Not just "blue" but the color of the sky in a Maxfield Parrish painting.

Repeated (with care). There is something reassuring about knowing what your signature color is. You can repeat the color in your home or wardrobe, meaning that some decorating decisions become easier. One caveat to keep in mind: You don't want to let your signature hue become watered down through overuse. Keep it special; a touch here and there (or one big statement) should suffice.

How to Find a Signature Color

Look back.
Your signature color might be something that resonates deeply with you, so it makes sense to think back to your formative years. Which crayon did you search through the box to find? Which colors did you paint with at school? Do you have any positive memories associated with a certain color?

Look around. If you need further inspiration, keep a small color notebook or (even better) take snapshots of anything that catches your eye. You never know where you might spy a color that calls your name: flowers in the garden, a film poster, a shop display or your own wardrobe.

How to Use Your Color

Gather inspiration. Have some fun figuring out how to apply it in your life. Start by creating a Houzz ideabook devoted to your color and filling it with inspirational pictures. Or if you want something more hands-on, use tear sheets from magazines to create an inspiration board.
by Andrea Brooks Interiors
Find your signature paint color. Take an object in your signature color to a hardware store that does color matching and find the paint shade that matches your color. Paint a whole wall if you feel inspired to, but at least pick up a sample pot to take home and commit to painting something small — a flea market chair or set of picture frames. And don't forget to write down the name of the paint color for future reference!
by Andrea Brooks Interiors
Seek out inspiring color combinations. Enhance your color by surrounding it with other colors that complement it. The Houzz color guides are a great resource.

Think up ways to use your hue. Have personalized stationery made, stock up on gift wrap, start a collection of pottery, curate an art wall or regularly stock your house with flowers in your signature color.

olldbobbi Is white a color? That's my first choice. If not, I'm really starting to like coral, I don't know when this happened but it seems to have become a dominant color in my wardrobe.

midmodfan It's often said that you should look at your favorite clothes to determine what your favorite decorating colors could be. That's not true with me, with the exception of white and dark gray/ black. So I guess those are my signature 'colors'. I seem to be kinda drab ... lol

By the way: the advice to bring your favorite fabric to a paint store is great. It's much easier to mix a matching paint than trying to find a fabric that matches the color of a certain wall.

tcufrog My signature clothing color is purple but I have no desire to decorate my home with it. For home and hearth I chose my favorite season, autumn. My signature color palette consists of autumn colors such as sage green, cream, brick red, etc. It feels cozy and soothing when I come home after a stressful day.

When my friends ask for decorating advice I tell them to think about what emotions they want the space to evoke and what places do they wish to return to. One friend loved the serenity and earthiness of her home state New Mexico so she chose Southwestern style for her living room, kitchen and powder room. Another friend loved the fun and adventurous vibe of her favorite Moroccan restaurant so she used it as inspiration when she wanted to spice up her bedroom's decor.

I'd love to see ideabooks showing how to take inspiration from restaurants since there are so many great ideas to be had from them. When I'm at a restaurant that has decor I love I'm not shy about whipping out my phone to take photos.

carolinaconnie My signature color is called winter's surf. Its a vintageish aqua turquoise. In my kitchen its pared with yellow, red in the living room, white in the dining room. You can see into all those rooms from multiple spots so accent colors from each space. Pops of yellow with billy ball flowers in the dining room, vintage red sugar/flour containers in the kitchen... my guest room is a tropical green and orange (from vintage pillows i found) and my bedroom is a poppy red accent wall and tan- pulled from the fabric on my headboard. I want to paint charcoal chalkboard stripes in the hallway and write favorite quotes on Them. My bathroom is still white, but it wont stay that way long. My motto is "its only paint".

cozarth I usually spend my energy trying to NOT use my color. If I used it whenever I think it would look great in 'that' spot everything in my home would be burnt orange. I have to make a conscious decision to do something else. Right now we are getting ready to do a master bath and I told my husband he has to pick an object and I will do the colors around it. It doesn't matter if it is a towel or a paint chip or a soap holder but he has to be the one to decide. Last time I did that it was some old purple curtains my mother was taking down so I decided to redo my bedroom around them. I have to avoid my signature color to keep everyone else from getting overwhelmed by it.

judithesl My signature color is turquoise, but I use it as pops of color, along blue, green and raspberry. The main upholstered pieces-- sofa, bed, chairs-- are a shade of wheat to match my fawn pug dog. Even my car has tan upholstery to cut down on the dog hair visibility.

tmbrew I love deep inky purples, I look for candles, cushions, vases, art works and lamp shades. It's great to have items in your signature colour because you can shuffle items from room to room. When your colour suddenly becomes fashionable again, it's hard not to buy up crazily!

giggles60 Green all the way. It makes me feel calm and refreshed. My living room is cottage style with yellows and green with a pop of lavender. I go and sit in there when I need to decompress. It works for me!

patscats2 bubb, LOL, that looks like my first apt. except the fridge was next to the bed. LOL

That last picture threw me. The wall color is horrible. The accessories are popping all over the place and the back drop is so pale and drab.

My signature colors are red and black and I make sure to have a little of each in every room. I loved the 70's when black and red were so popular. Loved my black and red carpet and my black bar with the red velvet front. LOL Yea, I had one!!! Let's not forget the red drapes!! Wish I still fit in that size 11 red jumpsuit I had too!!

elseasea tiffany blue was my wedding color and i used it in my home for my second baby's nursery ... it was such a soothing color that i've used it to paint an old piano amongst other things .. i've expanded to shades of turquoise, teal, aqua as well and my friends immediately think of me when they see this color in design ... =)

everydayplanner My signature color earthy tone oranges. I realized while designing rooms I was always incorporating a pop of clay-toned oranges as accents whether that was in fabrics, accessories or furnishings. Even in my own home, there is a subtle pop of orange throughout in artwork, pillows, lamp shades, etc.

mactwin blush is my signature colour - friends think of me when they see it and it shows up in my wardrobe consistently. It's not pink, not beige, maybe coral or peach, but definitely blush. It's hard to find anything for the home that isn't too sugary, I don't want a pink house (and my husband probably doesn't, either). I really like the idea of bringing your colour to the paint store to have it matched and then painting small things with it.
I'd love to find a BM shade that I can't paint in my hallway that doesn't read too pink

bmck #middleofnowhere,

"I reviewed my earlier answer, and now realize I have the color palette of a 13-year-old girl."

I'm laughing so hard right now! And I say bless that 13 year old girl and her intrepid love of colour. I'm a colour lover too. I'd say I'm around 17 or so in colour years. :) Bright light turquoise with pure white, sky blues, vivid light spring green, and hot pinks. I've never used hot pink in my home but I desperately want to. I want a home that makes me smile and lifts my spirits. I'm careful though. When it comes to saturation of colour as well as all-white rooms I always ask myself how I'd feel walking into that room with a headache or if I were depressed. It's a fine line, I think.

lydialou22 Glorious cobalt blue is my color. And my favorite place to find it is in blue and white dishes. I also love quiet French blue. But only one room has blue on the walls. I love walls of taupe or creamy yellow as a backdrop for pops of blue.

colorarq I have liked the concept very much, thank you for your post. It is interesting when people associate you with a colour when you have not considered it. as your favourite, it just happens to go with you, with your style or your personality, and only then you start thinking about it. I have had periods of lilac, neutrals, mauve, yellow... in time one can build a palette of signature colours.

Lanie Brown olldbobbi, you even have coral in your houzz profile pic! The white you surround yourself with must be so the coral you're attracted to pops.

Arlene Patterson I am into dark gray and tan with accents in bright green! Don't know why those call out to me (decor and clothing), but those colors are working throughout my house... even my laundry room.

Lanie Brown Benjamin Moore "autumn red" is my obsession color. It's the perfect blend of pink & yellow. It compliments the pink brick of my home - at least it will when I convince my husband to let me paint the kitchen & laundry room. It appears frequently in my wardrobe. Happy!
