Having house envy ended up being a good thing for Jonathan Greenland, who moved into a former coworker's home after long admiring its custom millwork. Jonathan and his wife, Tammy, infused the traditional-style home — set on a Newfoundland oceanside bluff — with their own relaxed cottage style. An expansive family-friendly basement with a home theater and wine cellar offers plenty of room for their three sons to play.

| The great room is one of the couple's favorite spots, but its high vaulted ceilings made creating a cozy feeling challenging. The couple went with a sea-inspired wall paint and added custom built-in shelving around the fireplace. The new built-ins replaced a large black TV unit. Tammy's sister and brother-in-law made the rustic coffee table with wood and nails from their family's 100-year-old barn. | The existing kitchen had great bones, but the Greenlands wanted more counter space and worked with Shiann Hynes of Kitchen Concepts to renovate. They painted the existing cabinets and added an island, a farmhouse sink and a dedicated coffee station. "The biggest change in renovating was the addition of the huge island. It is a homework station, prep and meal area, and great for entertaining," says Tammy. The door on the right leads to the backyard. | A 1,500-square-foot basement takes up the downstairs, including a home theater with a custom built-in surrounding a large TV. Speakers hide behind mesh-front doors. Theater-inspired sconces line both sides of the room, and there's a snack area with a microwave and refrigerator. "We really enjoy watching movies as a family; this is definitely the kids' and their friends' favorite area of the house," says Tammy. |

@bubblyjock-- Unless the family keeps their cooking on the simple side with an emphasis on braising and steaming they may come to regret their kitchen ventilation decision. I'm in the midst of a full house renovation and range hood ventilation is a major part of the kitchen and HVAC design. The pictured system is likely to be inadequate-- too small, too far away from the source, no way to capture the rising column of smoke and grease particles, etc. I'd actually even go as far as to say almost useless, especially as it appears the range is a high-powered pro-style one.
