Party On: 5 Decorating Touches for Jubilant Rooms Every Day
Why wait for a birthday? Hang cheery garlands, pom-poms and more for a festive outlook on even the most ordinary days

I'm a little nuts for garlands and bunting. And there's nothing more joyful than a big colorful puff ball. Most people save such exuberant displays for special occasions. But why should birthdays have all the fun?
These houses keep their joyful, festive decor all year round, so they are always ready to party.

1. Garlands. Colorful fabric pennant garlands add an instant dose of festivity. I love them in a nursery, where they keep a happy watch over a baby.
But garlands aren't just for babies. This knitted one goes with the crafty, artsy look of this living room.

Oilcloth pennants can hang outside all year long, and they add so much brightness and happiness to a space. Not everything needs to be buttoned down and grown-up.

A simple strand of pink flags gives a lot of personality and friendliness to an otherwise formal and well-appointed guest room. You can just tell the owners are fun people to stay with.

2. Pom-poms. Tissue paper pom-poms might just be the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to color, texture and pure fun. Why not keep them around all the time? It sure beats painting and repainting the walls as color preferences change.

Like garlands, pompoms are a big explosion of happiness in a nursery.

3. Streamers. These fabric streamers hung in a wagon wheel from the center of the room add both coziness and a circus-like cheer.

4. String lights. Simple strings of white lights hung like a ceiling over an outdoor table make even the plainest backyard feel beautiful, intimate and fun.

You can get the same feeling inside. And when all the other lights are out, you can pretend you are looking at the night sky.

5. Paper lanterns. They're both fun and sophisticated. Oh, and they cost about $5 a pop.

A cluster of colorful paper lanterns has the same effect as a balloon bouquet, but they last a lot longer.

Mary E I've always loved outdoor lights. I got married in my parents' backyard surrounded by the forest. Besides adding greenery and planting a lot of flowers that year, we strung white Christmas lights through the trees and hung white paper lanterns at varying heights. We didn't have to shell out for decorations we'd never use again, and as the sun went down and the lights gently illuminated the trees and the tent, my guests said it was totally enchanting. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it the same way (with the same guy, too!).
