madaboutdesign0924 I've always been interested in paint, nail polish, lipstick, and other color names. So creative, and maybe something I'd like to try some day. Credentials? Job title? Anyway, LOVE your tongue n cheek color names. My fav? Belly Fat.
madaboutdesign0924 Haha. My mistake...Beer Belly!
A. Peltier Interiors Love those names and even the colors are great. Really cute article!!!

kennedytarheel madaboutdesign0924...i liked belly fat better! We could add dog breath, unwanted guests, burp, first kiss, garbage pail...all the savory things in life! Thanks for the laughs. :)

orangecamera A new faux finish: Start with "Baby Bottom". Wipe with a damp cloth. Then cover with "Diaper White" (Be sure to coat the previous diaper with a thick coat of "Garbage Bag".) :D

hollyfhiggins This. Is. Brilliant. When I worked in a corporate office, I used to come up with names for the color of my boss' button-down shirts. A good way to pass the time and entertain yourself.
judyg May I add: MOUSES' BACK, GET BACK JACK, DEATH BY CHOCOLATE, FINAL STRAW, CHILLED CHARDONNAY.

THIS LIST IS THE WORST……:>)

graciel57 Let's see: A nice gray would be DOG DOOR ( the color of a muddy floor). A beige would be LEAKY ROOF (you know the color of a water stain on a white ceiling? That one.). A light green could be PEA-EWE.
olldroo My favourite - Baby Nappy Yellow - well that would be diaper to most of you. I actually worked in a building that was painted that colour. If going to work didn't make you feel ill, the building sure did!!!!

Gracie, I did try a colour recently that would probably be your dog door, it was called Puddle. Note I "tried" it - I didn't use it.

lelabelle Clever, hilarious and brilliant! I think I have "Dirty Swan" in my house right now :)

honceydame You may have made up these names, but we are actually painting our entire interior a color named HAND DUSTER. Couldn't believe the name, but it's the color we want.
Casart Coverings When we name our next colors for wallcovering design collections, I will be thinking of these. A little bit of humor goes a long way and these will have me smiling all day. Thanks!

lessismoore This would be my dream job. Will never forget when I mistakenly read "Hot Beef" as the color of a lipstick that was actually (not that this is much better) "Hot Beet." I wonder when this trend for evocative naming started?
plattgail Seriously? I did not know that beer bellies came in colours ! I must be more observant when I go to the beach !
My favorite colour name is Original Cinnamon...... (Say it out loud, you'll get it).
karelina Very funny! I once passed on a color that I couldn't imagine telling anyone the color name. Wish I could remember the name? I'm sure it wasn't as creative as these.
Hampton House Interiors, LLC We're all about paint colors. These names are a hoot. Can't wait to see the client's reactions!

sands213 Okay, the Wilted Plant is exactly the color I want for accents in my living room. It could also be named Dormant Grass in Ohio:)
pamc321 I would like a lovely, nursing newborn baby poop brown.... sorta greenish, sorta yellowish ... transparent brown. well maybe I would just prefer the newborn infant!
patricia beharry @ pamc 321------- The colour you are looking for would be called NEWBORN MECONIUM POOP. I am an expert at that colour,, I am a retired L&D RN. LOL....
pamc321 @ patricia beharry, No I really am looking for the color about 4-5 days post-partum after Mom's milk comes in. I am an expert too, the eldest sister of 7, mom of 2, "fired" grandma of three, and a Retired School RN.
patricia beharry @ pmc321---- Thought you were kidding. See you may have more experience than I do, since I only had them for 1hr post delivery. Good luck.
pamc321 @patricia beharry.... I am only kidding. My Grandaughter named one of her marker colors, baby poop brown... it was just a fleeting memory... bittersweet, but really don't want that color anywhere! Could also be named School Heath Room Floor too! ( Oh the memories of that too!)

Nikkie Moulton There actually is (or was) a paint "Louisiana Hot Sauce" by Benjamin Moore. I painted my front door with it.

CAROLE MEYER I love Used Tea Bag! This is very funny. Actually I find that the name of a paint has way to much impact on me. For example, if I love the color but hate the name, I simply must rename it in my mind if I am going to use the color. Kinda Crazy!
Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel As a former faux finisher, I always relied on Duck Poop Gold for antiquing.
orangecamera @Carole Meyer, I'm the same way. When sorting through the 50+ shades of gray paint chips I brought home to test out in my new bedroom, I didn't want to be influenced by the names. I actually cut up the paint chips/strips and removed the names (but I did leave on the numbers!).

colorlady Well where were all you wonderful namers last year when I had 1600 new paint colors to name? Just so you know, when naming a paint color the one rule is that the name should evoke a pleasant emotional response. No easy task with so many colors and a variety of personalities, generations and ethnicities to consider. I reached out to our employees for suggestions - some were great - like Spa Sangria and Finger Print (the color of dirty hand prints), others like Tossing Midgets and Cluster Fluff, not so much!
orangecamera ROFL @ "Cluster Fluff"!!!!

olldroo, thanks for asking. I posted this thread last week. http://www.houzz.com/discussions/335311

I'm going to try to get more pictures today.

karelina Looking back at the colors, I realized that wilted plant is exactly the color I'm looking for to paint the horrible fake paneling in my DR. I wonder if I can find it? Or, can I glaze the dark wood paneling or use some transparent green on top to get a color like that?
orangecamera @patricia beharry Please post a picture of your office when it's done!
sands213 I agree wilted plant is a great color, it's neutral but soft. it looks like a watercolor named Permanent Sap Green.
shabell Really into colors have had color matching experience and had colors which we had quirky names for fantastic!
maddecorator One thing I've learned is to choose the color without looking at the name of it. I purchased a paint called Colonial Blue, and it did look blue next to another gray, but when I got it home, it just looks gray.
madaboutdesign0924 Shabell...what do you mean by "color matching experience? For example, where ( not specific company) did you get the experience? How did such experience happen, and do you need any special credentials or training? Sounds like it would be fun.
Sheila Schmitz karelina, just to see what would happen, I uploaded a snapshot of Wilted Plant to the Sherwin-Williams "ColorSnap" app, and here are the paint picks that came up. (I tapped on a few different areas in the swatch.) Oh my gosh, if you really paint your wall Wilted Plant you really have to come back and show us.
karelina Sheila Schmitz: Ryegrass isn't bad, but I actually like the multi-colors in wilted plant. I just bought my house and have a million things to do, but I've put wilted plant on the list. I'll definitely come back, since Houzz is the source. Seems fair!
Attached is the before pic. The roof and ceiling are fixed and wood floor refinished. Light fixture installed. Working on cleaning stone. Needs window treatment. These are lovely old single pane windows which I plan to keep, so need something to close at night. Hopefully within the year.
Sheila Schmitz karelina, yep you'll need to get a few colors and apply them with a rag. Who knew a spoof color could inspire an actual paint pick?
gwen47 I will have to admit, somewhat sheepishly, that I painted a bathroom "Durango Dust" at least in part because of the name. Fortunately, it turned out to be the perfect color for the room and accessories. (Sherwin Williams---a very pale peach color.)
Nikkie Moulton When I moved to Canada and had to pick paint colors for my front door and house trim, I narrowed those down to about 5 or 6 each based on color alone. I couldn't decide. I opened the paint sample books up fully to write those names down so I could come back to them later. ,I noticed that one was called "Louisiana Hot Sauce" and the other was "Acadian White". Having been raised around New Orleans, I took that as a sign and decided then and there to use those colors. They looked wonderful and I received huge compliments on them. So for me, the names were important in my decision.
gwen47 Oops, Durango Dust is a Benjamin Moore color.

lauraoffice Nina, great article! Yes . . . paint names . . . who doesn't love something exotic!

Once, choosing paint for a bedroom, I couldn't make up my mind between Nantucket Fog and some other shade of blue, I was going back and forth between the two. When I asked the salesperson to pullup the stats on the paint, he said "They are exactly the same color, but with different names". He said a lot of companies do this. ( I must have really liked the blue)!

Daly's Paint & Decorating Guess what? I am one of the lucky people who actually names paint colors for C2 Paint!! It is more difficult than you might think to try and come up with expressive names. We have tongue-firmly-in-cheek names like "Venus Envy" and cool names like "Fandango" and "Milk Moustache". For the upcoming palette change this spring, we culled through over 4,000 name ideas that we gathered from clients, dealers and people from all over the country - for the 66 new colors. And even with alllllll those ideas, we still had about 5 colors that we were down to the wire on naming!!
karelina Daly: Well, clearly you should'a asked us!:) What fun! BTW, what's C2?
olldroo karelina - I can't believe he passed us up!!!!
maddecorator It would be hard for me not to buy a paint named Nantucket Fog! And then there are those OPI nail polish names like Aphrodite's Pink Nightie, Cajun Shrimp, Melon of Troy, and Cosmo-Not Tonight Honey (from the Russian collection).
