Displaying a collection of handsome dishes is a time-honored kitchen decorating idea. Keep it from feeling outdated by creating an abstract composition of uniformly colored plates.

How to hang a plate collection
Kitchen Banquette
There is no rule that says you can't display family photographs in the heart of the home. A gallery wall of photographs with glass-paned frames will let you gaze at your loved ones' faces without worrying about heat and grease damaging the photos.

If you are short on space, a pegboard is a fun and economical way to not only store but show off an enviable assortment of pots.

Everyone loves chalkboard walls. In the kitchen they provide the perfect spot for jotting down notes to your family, grocery lists and reminders.

Couple a chalkboard wall with the gallery wall idea, and you are officially in designer heaven and as far from kitschville as can be.

Open shelving is welcome on any empty wall space, because it offers more storage as well as styling and decorating opportunities.

Neon Pink Moka Express Print by Mengsel Design - $80.00 [ Link ]
I would put a framed food-related print on my open shelving. The neon pink of this one is fashionable now, and I could always switch out the print for another when the mood strikes to keep my kitchen feeling stylish.

Vintage lovers can look for old restaurant signs and menu boards. They make unique accessories.

If you have the motivation and means, step things up a notch with a feature wall. A painted abstract mural is divine and actually pretty inexpensive for the artistic among us. (You'd need patience too — it's time consuming.)

Upcycled barn wood for one accent wall would add pizzazz and that rustic touch without going too woody or dark.

I really like this feature wall of red industrial elements and barn wood in a dining niche.

Textured wallpaper is another idea for homeowners to add visual interest to a blank wall without actually hanging anything.

A. Peltier Interiors I love the white wall with the black frames of family pictures. So bold yet so simple!

Tile-Stones Vintage restaurant signs and menus are such a great idea to add character to a kitchen!

ymmdfd Our front hall color wraps around to peek into the kitchen (where the giraffe photo is) so we get to enjoy it there, as well. BTW the color is Extra Virgin Olive Oil by Glidden. Appropriate, no?

poogan I took some of my 94 year old mother's collection of kitchen items and made them into shadow boxes. The large one has cookie cutters, a rolling pin (and a photo of me when I was about 4 years old using it!) as well as one of my mother's handwritten, cherished recipes. In another shadow box, I used her jello molds in an artistic fashion. Ad yet a third shadow box, her hammered aluminum "crumb duster" set - the brush and tray. I had them professionally framed with brushed stainless steel frames. It's so personal, everyone comments on them- and special memories of my mom preserved. I also love my big clock from Restoration Hardware.

jeniecegoellner Mine is actually the uper beams that go around my kitchen. I found an artist I realy liked that did chef prints and placed them all around my kitchen, playing with some themes like "Milk" above the fridge or "Herbs" above my spice drawer.

burns_la I don't have any kitchen walls (really!) No uppers because I have all windows to enjoy our valley views. So...on the one wall with my microwave and fridge and pantry (behind the bard slider doors) I have a shelf, upon which I put all my "stuff" for display...

sjmom I really like the plate display. It add interest but doesn't take away from the room and if you have collected them over time even better.

Kimberly Niesz Fun ideas! Really like the look of the black frame gallery wall, and think the restaurant sign or menu is so perfect for the kitchen (count me in as one of the vintage lovers).
Although our kitchen will have to wait a while for its remodel, I found a large old bread sign at the flea market to add some interest until then. I also used magnetic primer and chalkboard paint on the pantry door.

Shannan Thompson I have a plate arrangement in my kitchen that I love. Others don't, however, because it's easy to knock the plates off. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can keep them there without gluing them to the wall?

garmangang Sharon - Have you tried the plate hangers that have prongs w/ springs on the back of the plates? I used them with my hanging plates and picture hangers that I pinched closed with pliers, hanging the spring wires through them. With 4 kids in the house we had no problems with them coming off the wall. Bouncing on the walls, YES! :)

pinktoesandpowertools I always felt that the space above the window in my kitchen was missing something. I decided to make a Fresh Egg sign and I love the end result! I blogged about how I went about making the sign here:

sammyammy19 That coffee maker and print are fun and it's a great idea to change it out whenever you get tired of it.
Where did you find that neon print?

Shannan Thompson @garmangang-thanks for the suggestion! I will try that. Immediately. We had a family party yesterday and they made it through, but it's only a matter of time before someone brings them crashing to the ground!

Liz Davey I have used 13 antique metal pie plates in a similar manner to the white plates in the first photo.
