For Morgan and Monica Campbell, it was all about the windows. Clerestory windows in the living room, floor-to-ceiling windows in the dining area and extra-wide windows in all three bedrooms created the cheery, expansive atmosphere they were looking for in their first home. "The second my husband and I walked in, we knew we were done looking," says Monica.
The Campbells have spent the past 18 months giving this 1955 house bright updates — everything from painting their bedroom chartreuse to tiling their kitchen backsplash to building their own headboard has helped make this house a home.

An open floor plan, natural wood beams running through the house and a midcentury modern style were all big selling points for the couple. A painted brick fireplace and wood accents create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Wall paint: Nimbus Cloud, Martha Stewart Living; bookcase: Expedit, Ikea; lounge chair: Eames, via Craigslist; light fixture: Atomic, High Fashion Home

The house itself provides the couple with design inspiration. "We love clean, simple lines and authentic materials in our decor, so our taste is a perfect fit for the home," says Monica. "It makes the decorating process more organic." Concert and theater posters frame the media console, a midcentury piece found at a consignment store. Rug: Ikea; sofa: High Fashion Home

Monica recently tried her hand at upholstering the slipper chair in the living room. The couple's latest find is this wood and glass coffee table. Their friend, stylist Brandi Powers, found it on a neighbor's curb for bulk trash pickup and rescued it.

As with most older homes, the kitchen required more attention. The couple installed new countertops, replaced all the light fixtures, updated the cabinetry and overhauled the island. "It's kind of a running joke between my husband and I when I tell him I'm thinking about starting another project," says Monica. "I know he's picturing my gamut of emotions: excitement, research overload, overwhelmed, stressed, upset, angry and, finally, couldn't be more relieved that it's done."

The quartz countertops were the couple's biggest splurge for the home. "Beautiful counters were a nonnegotiable for me," says Monica. The sides of the island are covered with faux wood flooring.

The dining area, set for two, gets beautiful filtered sunlight from the sunporch. Hand-me-down wood furniture contrasts with a modern light fixture. The sliding glass doors leading to the sunporch still have their original hardware. In the spring and summer, the Campbells hang out with their dog in the sunroom, which connects the house and carport. "Eventually we have dreams of enclosing the sunroom and turning it into a luxurious floor-to-ceiling-windowed office," says Monica. Wall paint: Ashes, Behr; rug: West Elm

Royal-blue walls make this small guest room feel grand and spacious. The iron bed was handed down from Morgan's parents. Monica says, "The blue is great, because it's very dark and inky at night but bright and cheery during the day." The throw pillows on the bed and the framed artwork overhead are made from vintage scarves; Monica collects them from secondhand stores. Wall paint: Starry Night Blue, Benjamin Moore

| Bold chartreuse adds serious zing to the master bedroom. "We love bold and saturated color," says Monica. "My husband's favorite color is chartreuse — I know, I'm a lucky girl. We haven't regretted it yet!" The couple found the corner chair in a Dumpster and sanded it down to give it new life. | During the winter the Campbells typically hang out in their home office. "It's the perfect wintertime room, because the sun hits the windows throughout the afternoon," says Monica. "I love this room, because my husband can work on the computer and I can read a book while our dog sunbathes in the leather chair." Floor lamp: Z Gallerie; rug: West Elm; striped throw: Eivor, Ikea |

The couple has an easy time making design decisions together. Monica says, "My husband and I have very, very similar tastes, and the list of compromises has been short thus far." Morgan refinished a length of reclaimed wood and paired it with a set of legs from Ikea to create his desk. A gallery wall hovers over a worn but loved green leather sofa. The couple frequently hosts game nights with friends, and the home office is the perfect place to spread out and get comfortable. Wall paint: custom from Behr; floating shelves: Ikea

Even though the home-owner's taste does not necessarily resonate with my own taste, they're always interesting, and tend to be very much more personalized than typical show-homes that have been tweaked and staged to within an inch of their lives.
This article is a case-in-point: although I'm more into traditional styles, I love what these people have done with this house, and the thoughtful touches that obviously make it a well-loved home for them are super!
While their taste isn't my taste, there were many touches I admired --- like using subway tile in a pattern that doesn't make evoke memories of crowded metros or public toilets. Great ideabook!
