The L-shaped sofa, dramatic media unit and killer city view make this room a crowd pleaser. "It's like a solarium with light pouring in in the afternoon," says Herman.

Custom built-ins cover the air conditioning unit under the windows, creating coveted storage and a surface for pictures of family and friends. Storage above the TV also helps keep clutter at bay.

Inspired by the full-wall photo installation in the Museum of Modern Art's restaurant, Herman decided to create a similar feel in his living room. Designer and friend Richard Johnson found this tree wallpaper at Rock My Wall. A framed landscape above the sofa adds dimension.

An open floor plan allows Herman to cook dinner for guests without leaving the party.

A functional kitchen was important to Herman, who loves to cook and entertain. A simple layout provides plenty of workspace; a new Turkish striped backsplash tile adds texture.

Open shelves double as a beverage station — another entertainment-friendly element.

Herman replaced the foyer's closet; now it also serves as the kitchen pantry. The black lacquer doors were inspired by a Coco Chanel documentary.

This tall bar table with custom leather bar stools doubles as a place where Herman can work in addition to having dinner.

A custom agate light box between the living room and bedroom catches the eye right away. Herman received pictures of the huge slab before the light box was made so he could pick which section he wanted to use for this piece.

Herman thoughtfully curated the art pieces around his home. This oil painting, "Without/Within," is by Lynn McCarty and from the Nancy Hoffman Gallery.

The living room provides a peek of the Empire State Building between skyscrapers.

Herman installed a new toilet, tile and a glass shower door in the bathroom. Painted green striped walls help make the space feel bigger and continue the home's nature-inspired palette.

Art is everywhere, including in the bathroom. Artist John Duckworth of Charleston, South Carolina, makes photographs that look like paintings; this piece is titled "Hollywood Beach." The artist visited the apartment to show his work to Herman, who has since become a collector.

Herman wanted his bedroom to feel like a mix between a museum and library, so Johnson added lots of texture and masculine color via grass cloth wallpaper, a cowhide rug and dark woods.

A prized painting by Michael Gregory hangs above the bed as the room's main focal point.

A custom storage unit opposite the bed combines a bookshelf, desk and dresser. Herman became obsessed with finding these textured drawer pulls, which he eventually acquired in London.

A hide rug adds extra visual texture to the space.

Although he loves his home, Herman is already dreaming about his next — preferably bigger — apartment. "It's got to have two bedrooms and lots of wall space," he says.

Don Roberts Congratulations. Your apartment is simply stunning. It looks amazingly warm and inviting while being modern. I absolutely love your artwork and the wall behind the sofa. Having a view of the Empire State Building is the cherry on the top.

normpo I can't believe it's only 700 square feet! I love the kitchen, it fits in perfectly. The colors and the artwork are wonderful. I can imagine the views. How lucky you are!

Norma Sassone Very tasteful with beautiful furnishings and that view! I must say that my eye instantly went to the citrus fruit in the kitchen the red books in your bedroom and the lampshade that turned purple with the light on. Last but not least, minimal color-wise, I adored that gorgeous agate box light with its blues and greens. Also, what a great idea to put the tree mural in the living room to open up the room to the outdoors and nature.

Kate In Montana They have done a fantastic job with this small space. So thoughtfully laid out but I can see he already needs a bigger place!

edmarch Certainly looks sleek and elegant. But two TV's in a 700 sq ft apartment seems a bit much.

scotshot Clutter. All of the tiny knick knacks. The photos on the window ledge. Using the base of an Arco lamp as a telephone stand?

This is a contemporary version of my Nana's house.

krylela I love the wall mural application. I've been storing a few of my own photo murals, but have been too chicken to use them because I don't want it to look cheesy. To wall mural or not to wall mural? That is the question...
Also I designed a very similar paint design for my master bedroom as this hall closet, but again I was too timid to execute it so thanks for this article.

Ellen My daughter had an apartment in Manhattan with the exact footprint and square footage as the one featured, only it was shared with her husband, infant daughter and dog! Wow, was it crowded!

lovesmesomepitbulls I wish I had your "eye." There is a special way of seeing that transforms the pretty good into the extraordinary. I love the contrast between the moody rural painting above the bed with the ultra-urban view out the window. I wouldn't have favored the wallpaper in the living room by itself, but the framed print makes it wonderful. The deco-ish/modern-ish black lacquered doors are perfect - but who would have guessed that beforehand? I envy folks like you! Thank you for sharing this.

Stacey Allen This place is great! Every sqare inch was well thought out; highly functional and great design

Norma Sassone For only 700 sq feet this is definitely not cluttered. One does have to have lamps and books and plates and a few treasured art pieces and doo dads here and there, you know. I dont think it is overdone at all. See below for a truly cluttered NY apartment. PS: Click on the X to open it up.

ModernistLighting.com Space in Manhattan can be unforgiving, but you utilized it well. I need that Zebra chair in my life. http://is.gd/GhSeej

Diamondflame Excellent use of limited space. I am however baffled by the framed 'landscape' above the sofa. Instead of adding depth it simply nullifies the awesome 'view' proffered by the wintry landscape wallpaper. A wall mirror behind the TV may be a better option to visually extend the living area. I would also edit out some of the frames lining the window sill.

NEMM Design Group, Inc. This should be an example for all men and bachelors...thank you for inspiring people and showing how important it is to live well, regardless of size and budget. Not all men have such great taste, but they can always consult with an interior designer. Live well, you deserve it!
