JTBaldwin Love the article and certainly the idea of taking a part of history and making it relavent in today's home. Right now, I am in the process of repurposing a huge WWII aerial photography lens as well as its original storage/shipping trunk. Your words gave me the inspiration to work a little faster. Thanks!

Sigrid Why is it that my battered trunk looks like poverty-stricken grad student decor and designers get away with calling them "stunning" and putting them in "elegant" rooms?

That would be an interesting Ideabook. What separates the chic from the shabby? with examples of the same item used in both looks.

groveraxle @Sigrid, I think it becomes stunning as soon as you top it with a handmade basket gathered on your $10,000 trip to Rwanda.

comicbooklady neat idea, would have liked to have seen better examples like the condiment cans and the tent, but military tan paint???pfft! I am inspired!

comicbooklady here's a few ideas I would have liked to have seen: medals on display, photographs, propaganda posters, uniforms, artwork of military airplanes, actual recovered military junk repurposed, toy military vehicle collections, signs....etc.

Chad I love this decor concept. I too share in this concept in my house. I have a WWII poster collection that I plan on getting framed and on the wall shortly; and I just mounted a reflective mirror-finished aluminum airplane propeller on my wall.

Jodi Blackmon Those are really neat! My husband is retired AF and for his birthday I painted an old cedar trunk to look like an old AF trunk with his name and rank on it. It's his favorite piece in his man room.

Corky Turner I Have a vintage steamer trunk, and a tiny livingroom - now I have ideas on what to do with the trunk in that space.

lynneldavis Wow, this trunk looks just like ours. We bought it at an auction house for $150.00. My husband carefully cut through the hinges and installed slide rails so the top will slide back.It sits on top of a floor plug so with a small hole drilled through the bottom we have power for a small lamp and telephone Our trunk sits between two recliners for TV viewing. Visitors are amazed.

pauli12 My dad was in WW2 for 55 months and wrote his mother over 350 letters. I have framed one of them. I had to crop the name out but note the stamp area where he wrote 'free'.
Also note that the Army had Bible Scripture on the letter heads.
This made a beautiful display and I love looking up and seeing my dad's beautiful handwriting. It just warms me up.
Thanks for this beautiful idea book. I love all the ideas.

pauli12 I want to add this one cropped more so you can see the letter head and verse.

Angela Pascoe I agree as a veteran would have liked to see ways to post medals, display cases, flags, awards that I have.
