Check out the gorgeously designed and furnished new space now that the paint is dry and all the pieces are in place
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

The Dream Living Room is complete! Mary Pucul of Vandling, Pennsylvania, winner of our Dream Living Room Sweepstakes, and her husband, Carl, are now cozied up in their beautiful new room. The $40,000 prize covered $16,000 in furniture from Design Within Reach and $16,000 in services from interior designer Ani Semerjian, as well as taxes. The couple have been living with a construction zone downstairs for months, but their new space is bright, modern and, most important, comfortable. "We couldn't be happier with the design that Ani did for us and the time and travel she put in," Pucul says.

Semerjian chose a neutral color palette with green accents. "I chose the color green as my main accent color, because I really liked the way the green popped against the furniture," she says. "I felt the space needed to be warmed up since I used a cool-toned color palette. Also, the town of Vandling is in the mountains, and I thought the green was a nice way to bring the color of nature indoors."
Green was a big hit with Pucul, who says, "My favorite thing in the room is the colors; they all go together so well." A mix of pillows from Design Within Reach add green accents on the sofas.

| Semerjian replaced the sink in the corner with this sleek Line Bar. "Carl loves the wine bar; it holds all his favorite things," Pucul says. The designer lightened up the room with paint on the walls and ceiling, and created a clean-lined and comfortable seating area with more Design Within Reach items, including two Raleigh sofas, a Noguchi coffee table and a sleekMilo Baughman recliner. The wood on the sofas, the bar and the coffee table base adds warmth to the mix. |

A glass Miba pendant highlights the bar. "I thought the shape was interesting, and I love the way the green chamber glows when lit," Semerjian says.

Semerjian spied these drapes at the High Point Furniture Market and knew they'd be a great way to add pattern and amp up the presence of the window. "I loved the geometric pattern on the drapes," she says. "They are 100 percent cotton, fully lined, and have a very substantial weight and feel to them. I chose grommets instead of rings for a more structured and clean look."

A midcentury modern classic, this leather Milo Baughman recliner, as well as a teak stool used as a side table add more warmth and make for a comfy spot where the couple can put up their feet.

"I felt that the scale of the existing fireplace was too narrow and small for the large wall," Semerjian says. She solved this by surrounding it with tile. She chose Savoy Penny from Ann Sacks. "I loved the color, the scale and the geometry of the tile," she says. "I framed the edges with a metal Schluter strip to finish off the edges and to frame it like a work of art." The fireplace is now a strong focal point in the room.

| "On a day like today, with a lot of snow falling, both Carl and I enjoy lighting the fireplace, opening a bottle of wine and just relaxing in our new room," Pucul says. Carl often spends time reading here while she's at work. "He finds it very calming," she says. "I recently had my book club girls over, and we spent the afternoon sitting around the coffee table eating snacks and discussing many things — including the book we read." "The Puculs were absolutely wonderful to work with — very easygoing and appreciative," Semerjian says. "I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them. I'm really happy they won, because good people deserve good things." More: See the room before its makeover |
