The main floor's tented cedar ceiling was one of the few elements the couple did not have to rip out. "The way it looks today is the way it looked to us within the first five minutes of seeing it," says McLeod, a design consultant for Johnson McLeod.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
"When we're in Vancouver, we are very busy, both with our design projects and a social life that combines work and pleasure," McLeod says. "The cottage is our respite, and although summertime includes wonderful visits with friends, we are often alone there the rest of the year, enjoying some solitude and watching nature."
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
The couple replaced and added windows for better natural light and views.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
"Every day we see seals swimming past and eagles soaring by. There are deer sleeping under our fruit trees, and occasionally a killer whale in the bay," McLeod says.

Out here on the porch, a bowl of twigs has the look of a fire pit without the fire hazard. "The glowing-embers effect was created by tucking strings of orange twinkle lights in among a whorl of local driftwood sticks," McLeod explains. "We made the outdoor coffee table that it sits on and used a large drill bit for the extension cord. The absence of a visible power source completes the illusion."

Johnson and McLeod were champing at the bit to start realizing their vision; they began demolishing walls the day they took possession of the house. "As in all of our work, we focus on increasing light and opening up longer sight lines," McLeod says. "To that end we tore down the wall between the kitchen and main living room, creating one huge space."

One of their many DIY projects includes the combination kitchen island and wood stacker, which divides the kitchen space from the dining area.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
"Our favorite aesthetic is white with wood, both here and in the city," McLeod says. "This provides nice contrast to the original clear cedar ceiling in the main space, while gallons of crisp white paint contemporize the house and help us to see."
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
The couple has furnished and accessorized with local finds, DIY projects and found objects, such as driftwood. "We enjoy making new things blend with the old, and old things blend with the new," McLeod says.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
The kitchen had been its own closed-off area, and the cabinets were in bad shape. McLeod and Johnson wanted to make it enjoyable to look at in the new open first-floor space.
HT: Mayne Island
Wood and white contrast in the new kitchen: Fir plywood cabinets echo the cedar ceiling, while white appears in the stainless steel countertops and tongue and groove paneling. The lack of upper cabinets opens up the space.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
"The local Home Hardware is our favorite haunt, as we're usually making something. We have always loved DIY projects and are too fast and impatient for help," McLeod says. "We built and hand painted our chunky coffee table, storage units and the library shelving."
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
McLeod and Johnson did add a wall on the main floor; it divides the formerly large bedroom into two smaller bedrooms.
HT: Mayne Island
Tongue and groove paneling lends a cottage feel to the bedrooms. The orange shelves at the end of the bed are another DIY project.

The two new cozy rooms have a transom window between them.

The lower guest bedroom ceiling is made of bleached plywood panels and white strapping.
by Johnson + McLeod Design Consultants
The couple has owned the home since 2005, but they're not done making improvements, as those are part of the fun of their island lifestyle. "We walk everywhere, make every meal and much of the furniture," McLeod says. "After a few weeks of that, neon lights and takeout food in the Vancouver is like a trip to Paris — we love the contrast!"

Chalkeri I am so impressed with this makeover! I love it when blacks are used as an actual color in a color pallet, as seen in this living/dining/kitchen combo. (From my computer it appears black but could be a dark black/brown?) I also enjoy how you've achieved warmth in a mostly white room through the use of the woods and orange tones! Beautiful!

jcanost I am in LOVE with this home! I went from picture to picture and got more excited with each view. Honestly, I don't know what lured me more: the crisp white-paneled walls and dreamy wood ceiling, the perfect kitchen and overall layout, or the many special touches and treasures throughout. I would probably never leave the porch with its cozy, faux fire and deer grazing nearby. The icing on the heavenly cake is the amazing view. Thank you for sharing this beauty!

Hugh Wolfe Great looking home. It's success stories like this one that leave me wondering why we are still building new homes when theres an abundance of older homes in need of renovation.

This is an amazing transformation. Thank you for sharing!

Marina Klima Goldberg - Klima Design Group I love how they use light and dark colors in almost every room. I like how they use dark wood as I use it in some of my projects too. Great makeover!

bubblyjock Like the idea of the bleached ply ceiling with white "coffering" in the lower guest bedroom; I see ply being used more and more for walls, which imo isn't often nice, but as a ceiling, with crisp white defining the shape instead of trying to hide the seams, it's very pleasing.

7lexi7 Oh! Both water views and a southern exposure? yum. What a lovely, sensitive restoration. It's modern without being sleek, lovely clean lines softened by all the handmade items they've created. This is lovely. kudos to the designer/homeowners.

I would love to see a floor plan. I'm trying to piece it together from the photos, but it seems that they've made excellent use of the space in terms of orientation and size.

minihorse I'm wondering if you had to get a building permit? I am in New Brunswick Canada, and I want to renovate my cottage and use the cable rail system on the deck, as you have. Our unimaginitive permit system here won't allow it.

jimzeichman The interior transom window is also called a "borrowed light" because it takes light from a brighter room and gives it to a darker one. Well done!

sclawson Wish most of the vacation homes up for rent would take a gander at this redo. Now THIS is the kind of place I'd like to escape to. Sadly, so many places look like these 'Before" photos and still carry a hefty rental fee.

whalerwoman thank you for a TRUE "before and after" pictorial. unlike..ahem...some other glossy magazines that feature construction photos as the "before" shots (duh. i would HOPE a completed project looks better than construction did), this was truly informative and a lot of fun.
Becky Harris @whalerwoman, I'm grateful Ian and Kerry had documented the "before" stage and shared it. I think a lot of times people don't think to take the BEFORE shots because they are raring to get started! Here are a few more they sent me.

Coldwell Banker The Real Estate Group Inc. Gorgeous! As a Realtor, it is truly a great joy to work with home-buyers who approach a property with eyes open to structure, location and possibilities. (It's continually amazes me how many people cannot see beyond a home's dated cosmetics.)

Color+Life Creative LLC I can attest to this being a beautiful house, inside and out, now. My husband and I were fortunate enough to be friends with the (former) co-owners of this house, who helped do the work to make it what it is now. We stayed for a couple of weekends (in the downstairs blue+white guest room), and this house just EMBODIES relaxation. Love it!

suzgal59 I love the color choices and the decor! We just purchased a condo at the lake and I'm about to start the demo of the kitchen/LR combo. So I have a question: I noticed that the flooring in the kitchen and the living room are two different materials. Presently I have white 12" tiles in the kitchen and carpet in the living room. I was thinking of removing the tile and the carpet and putting in a bamboo floor. But now seeing your photos maybe I should keep the tile?

ltcroucher This article reminds me so much of our house. We bought it last year for the waterfront view. But the house itself has been unoccupied for months after the previous 97-year old owner moved to a nursing home and sadly died there. The roof was home to racoons and various birds. The rooms were frozen from the 1970's when the house was built. We stripped the house to the studs, opened up rooms and raised the roof another 6 feet. The images are the before and after kitchen.

chmir A wonderful makeover on this house. Especially love how you opened up the kitchen and added the island, as well as additional light. I am wondering how you addressed the mold issue? I have done a renovation on an older home and removed and also replaced some walls, insulation, roof, etc., but am still plagued by a mold smell in one of my downstairs bedrooms. This room gets very little light as it is at the back of the house and covered by an upslope and deck.

Marcia Crumley Fine Art It’s so refreshing to see a “cottage” that truly is a cottage!!! Everything about this renovation is spot-on – no frivolous touches, no luxury indulgences – just a home that celebrates the natural beauty that surrounds it.

There are way too many things here that I love – but just have to call out the bleached plywood panels in the guest bedroom ceiling and the fake fire pit. This house is simply stunning!!

sharong I love this renovation - especially the use of color. However, I don't understand the kitchen island/wood storage box. In our neck of the woods storing firewood indoors is always a risk because of the bugs that come in on the wood - making this particularly inappropriate for a kitchen. Is the bug situation different in Vancouver?

chmir Becky, How did they address the mold issue? Was it enough? Did they do air samples before they started to determine what type of mold they were dealing with?
I am wondering as I am working on a job where we had significant mold damage. We have removed all the mold we found, along with 18" beyond last sign of mold. My handyman cut away areas and sealed the exposed wood left with some chemical (not sure what).
Did you use something to seal before you replaced drywall? Did you add mold inhibitors to paints before application? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

dennajones I frequently see rehabs by architects and/or designers who are too keen to make their mark and that often compels them to overclad or alter the existing structure in ways that are neither warranted nor sympathetic to the original. This house makeover is superb. And the duo behind it are too modest. "Too fast and impatient for help"? Not so. Your DIY projects look simple, unaffected and well built.
