Jacobson started with the wallpaper in the dining room. She decided green or blue would look best with the rich wood, so she wrapped the wall space above the wainscoting in an emerald green Feather Fan print. “I wanted it to be more a cool tone but saturated with the wood,” she says.

She also knew right away that she wanted black lacquered chairs to contrast with the wood. She liked the style and shape of these vintage midcentury dining chairs, but they were originally brown wood, so she had them painted with black lacquer and reupholstered in funky patterns. “I liked that pink salmon on the chairs with the green walls,” she says.

The black and white flat-weave wool rug was the last element.

The designer looked at getting vintage light fixtures, but this Jonathan Adler chandelier and matching sconces were much more reasonably priced. The near-black metal works well with the black in the chairs.

Instead of starting with the walls, Jacobson designed the living room from the vintage Turkish rug. “The style is really popular right now,” the designer says. The green in the rug matches the tile on the fireplace, and she knew the couple wanted a blue sofa, a color also found in the rug. “Blue always contrasts nicely with warm wood,” she says. The color of the sofa nailed it perfectly: “It’s almost like a peacock blue; there’s a hint of green in it.”

After seeing a photo of a vintage French coffee table, Jacobson replicated the design for this custom table with an antique brass plate finish.

She refinished two of the couple’s tall shiny silver bookcases with a dark iron color that she calls oil-rubbed bronze.

The target painting is by on-the-rise Los Angeles artist Jason Koharik. It hangs above a vintage Danish wood chair. The sconces are from Visual Comfort. The white lacquered console table with dark metal base was custom made by Weego Home.

The powder room features Zebra Collection wallpaper from Scalamandre. The design has been popular since it was first used in the New York restaurant Gino in 1945. Here it’s paired with a black and white rug from Crate & Barrel.

The bench is a reproduction Thonet design of black lacquered bentwood with a cane seat and cane back.
by Taylor Jacobson Interior Design
Wanting something fun and graphic in the master bedroom, Jacobson started with the Tropical Bird wallpaper. “The clients had to think on it for a week or so," she says. "It’s a lot going on. They had to be sure they would love it.” The room is now the wife’s all-time favorite.

The gold ball with crystal beads light fixture is from Serena & Lily. “It’s a very feminine piece,” the designer says.

With the rather neutral custom Roman shades, wallpaper and upholstered headboard, Jacobson wanted to bring in a scoop of color. She added the royal-blue flat-weave rug from The Rug Company, two turquoise lamps, vibrant pillows and a pixelated green and blue throw blanket.

The wood bench was added by the homeowners.

The vintage Danish nightstands follow the same idea as the dining chairs: the all-wood pieces were muted down with partial black lacquer; here they play off the black, gold and white wallpaper.

patricia beharry This a great example of 'please don't paint the wood' as was discussed in an article last week. This is just beautiful.

nantucketsunrise Beautiful home and I'm loving the brass plated coffee table. Great mix of old, new and one of a kind pieces. Also, hurrah for not painting that beautiful wood!!!

she2 Nice & I agree with Patricia. Keep in mind for resale, there are a lot of us home buyers who LOVE interior wood. We will never buy painted wood or all white interior homes, no matter what is " In".

oriah I have to be the voice of dissent on this one. The dining room's patterns and color leave me feeling nauseated. The wood is lovely but is eclipsed by the disjointed look of the decor. The bedroom could be charming if the wallpaper were an accent rather than enveloping every wall and competing with the graphic rug. Jacobson calling the "refinished" metal shelves "oil-rubbed bronze" cracks me up....yeah...that's what rustoleum calls the spraypaint too. I love the zebra wallpaper!...and it's restrained use.

drjosiepc1 This is one cool house, and the owners did a great job with the "fun" colors. The bedroom has too much going on for my taste; it's the wall paper that leaves me cold. But if it works for the sleepers, then it is fine.

patricia beharry actually, I looked more at the house than the decor.; and I love the workmanship of the house. That said, and I hope I don't offend anyone, The wallpaper in the bedroom reminds me of the old Hitchcock movie "the birds is coming, the birds is coming".

Marilyn Wilkie Add me to the column for leaving the beautiful woodwork instead of painting it a "creamy white". Though people who would buy a truly beautiful Craftsman style home like this would appreciate all of the wood I would hope. I also love the tropical bird wallpaper in the bedroom. It is perfect in that it is in black and white - very whimsical and airy. What a fantastic dining room, just amazing.

kbaywitch I agree that you can lighten up and add a little interest to craftsman style, but come on! You take a gorgeous craftsman house with some of the most beautiful looking wood I've seen, and distract from it with those bizarre colors!! No!

ptmatthews Question: How were the metal bookcases refinished? Just spray painted? or powder-coated? or what?
I have mixed feelings on this house. Of course you wouldn't paint the woodwork because it was beautiful to start with and was totally restored by the previous owners. Not all woodwork is this nice, and then I think it is OK to paint it. The design choices are not ones I would have picked - I think the house could be much more attractive with more traditional choices - but I do believe in people having fun with their own homes!

lauren90211 Love the craftsman style and kudos for keeping the woodwork pristine. I am not a fan of this particular color green with the woodwork. Loved the rug, though.

sands213 I like it. I can see the family all cozy on the blue couch with their feet up on the table reading books. I also enjoy the color of the dining room wall paper. I guess emerald is the color of 2013.

padmajamm A beautiful house with gorgeous woodwork. I personally do not understand the color choices of the walls and, though often a fan of eclectic decor, do not like the modern fixtures and furnishings in this environment. It all seems to clash. But each to his own...a house is only a home if it feels good for the owners. I hope the owners love & enjoy their home.

anokasams I like the woodwork and am happy that the designer kept it intact. The colour and pattern in the rugs and wallpaper would not be my choice. I know it is described as "fun", but it does nothing for me. The decor reminds me of a "before" picture and I could see another designer coming in here and saying "this has to go". Sorry.

morehouselake FINALLY!!! A house is shown with wood (unpainted) woodwork and trims! As much as I love looking at what designers have done with houses, you rarely see them tackle a house with all the beautiful woodwork. My house is 110 years old (built by my Grandfather) and sits by the lake. All the woodwork, beams, fireplaces, crown molding, etc. are Cypress (darkened with age). I've learned to decorate with colors and furnishings that complement all the wood. Color and pattern are a very personal choice and should not be dictated by "what's in". Paint is cheap and throw pillows are quick to recover. Art is what you love, regardless of what others may think. Your house is only yours....make it so!

wantsideas Curious to know what year this house was built? The text said "Craftsman style" which is evident in the living and dining room. But the master has white painted trim on windows and five panel door. I think the woodwork is beautiful and wouldn't consider painting it, but I'm not a fan of that green in the dining room. Looks like the dining room has a pocket door? I would love to see the kitchen in this house to really get a feel for it.

drjosiepc1 It was not unusual to paint the second floor level wood work white in the craftsman house. I have seen this in several of these houses. My last house had unpainted fruit wood on the first level, and all the wood work on the second level was white, although some of the doors were of fruit wood. I did not have a pocket door to the dining room but a fold out french door!

lilette I LOVE the woodwork in this house. We have similar woodwork in our house (on a much smaller scale) and I had a designer come in to take a look to help me decide what to do in terms of decor and she said I should paint it all white....She was fired before she was hired. I have to say though, not all of this decor works for me, I love the Zebra wallpaper and dining room light fixture and a few other points. But the feature of this home is the wood, so I LOVE it!

oldblackdog Naturally, I love Craftsmans, Love the woodwork, so had to look. There's a lot I like - the whimsy of the wallpapers - and I am surprised, I love those birds, - and can see how they could be a backdrop for anyone's favorite color mixes - a print neutral. The rug ( which is blueor beige, in different pic] -not for me. Am fond of deep greens and like that DR wallpaper, too. The DR rug is another idiosyncratic choice not for me. The dining table and chairs seem ill proportioned to each other and the room. Actually, the chairs do not look substantial or comfortable. But that's not about the overall design.
Have at times had friend with homes that had lovely extensive natural woodwork and begged them to leave it alone and at the least live with it for a while before jumping to paint as the solution to adding lightness. And here, I love that chandelier.

mcbriec This is a very lovely home with stunning woodwork. But I think it is very difficult to meld old world/traditional style with modernist furnishings and not have it come out looking disjointed. To my eye, all the furnishings would look great in a spare modernist house, but simply clash with the gorgeous woodwork in this house. However, if the homeowners love the combo, that's all that matters.

mlombaed I love this home. The woodwork is beautiful! The home looks warm, comfortable, and inviting. I had the white woodwork in our home replaced with hemlock wood and the transformation reflects what I see in this home; warmth, character, and beauty. The light fixture in the dining room is exquisite; perfect for the home. I am going to google Jonathan Adler right away.

ohonestly The turquoise lamps are attractive, but you can't appreciate or find them and other decorative features with the busy competition of the wall, floor, rug and blanket.

beaniegirl Sorry, but there's nothing about the decor I like. It seems disjointed and is in no way pleasing to the eye. The woodwork, absolutely love it.

CAROLE MEYER I simply do not understand the choices made in the interiors of this home. The home itself is lovely and the wood is beautiful, but the combination of patterns and colors do not compute for me. However, I am sure the homeowners love it and that is the most important thing.

Casey Martinez I really appreciated seeing the dining room since I have a similar (in concept) situation that I have been struggling with. My paneling is salvaged which explains why some wood looks newer and why there are paint remains.
In my dinning room I have found it difficult to keep the room "light and fresh", the paneling is so dominant. The color shone is my forth attempt which is meant to match the new oak on order to unify the paneling and plaster parts. One color attempt was a dark green faux finish but the room looked like a Charles Dickins movie and room was just too dark. I too have been thinking of modern furniture. My family also uses the rooms for all meals so a rug isn't an option until the kids are older.

srjb7112 I love the Craftsman style but do not love the decorating choices. Geometric selections could have been better. In this case the choices are too focal rather than being complementary to the style of the house for me. There doesn't seem to be a good transition between the house and what occupies it.
