The Unofficial Houzz Academy Awards for Movie Homes

Most Beautiful Plantation House: Forrest Gump. The race was tight between this house and Tara, but Sally Field's Southern home in this one is Gone With the Wind fabulous. We love the allee of trees that drip Spanish moss, the double porch, the way the breeze makes the curtains billow and the wonderful old tree where Forrest teaches Jenny how to dangle.

Something's Gotta Give - $7.99 [ Link ]
Best Shingle-Style Beach House: Something's Gotta Give. This is overwhelmingly the Houzz community's favorite movie house. The airy Hamptons beach house of Diane Keaton's character has become the dream house yardstick. We want the kitchen, the cool coastal palette, windows with transoms that look out to the beach and even the bowl full of collected stones (with the black one on top). We're not sure if we want the cigar-smoking emotionally stunted houseguest, though ... actually, we'll take Jack Nicholson no matter how obnoxious he's acting.
By the way, we're letting this one represent all of the enviable homes in director Nancy Meyers' movies, including The Holiday, It's Complicated and the LiLo version of The Parent Trap, which are all Houzzer favorites when it comes to movie houses.

Under the Tuscan Sun (Widescreen Edition) - $10.66 [ Link ]
Best Italian Villa: Under the Tuscan Sun. Diane Lane transforms her dilapidated life while fixing up a dilapidated Tuscan villa. We want the window boxes, the aged walls, the European antiques, the quirky neighbors, the olive grove and the garden. We'll leave out the big snake that comes through the window, though — that scene still gives me the willies.

Practical Magic - $5.97 [ Link ]
Best Victorian House: Practical Magic. The turreted Salem, Massachusetts, home of witches played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman is a great spot for casting spells, stirring potions and gathering a coven of nonwitches. Just be careful what you bury in the yard and don't try flying off the roof with an umbrella on Halloween.

Marley & Me - $13.69 [ Link ]
Best Farmhouse: Marley & Me. The idyllic stone Pennsylvania farmhouse featured toward the end of the movie is quite a contrast to the Miami ranch house at the beginning. Autumn leaves, stone walls and Oriental rugs make us want to curl up like a dog in front of one of the roaring fireplaces and stay awhile.

Father of the Bride - $11.72 [ Link ]
Best Classic Colonial: Father of the Bride. This lovely Los Angeles home is a common American dream — it has white siding and black shutters, is full of cozy family-friendly spaces and has a basketball hoop for serious father-daughter bonding time.
by Amazon
Monster-in-Law - $4.99 [ Link ]
Best Arts and Crafts House: Monster-in-Law. While Jane Fonda's mother-in-law character turns the home into something out of a horror flick, the lovely woodwork and Craftsman details ease the terror. Also, the stylish interiors may very well be responsible for the surge in demand for vintage black and white subway signs, which are used throughout the main floor.

A Single Man - $7.99 [ Link ]
Best Midcentury Modern Home: A Single Man. You can see the evidence of director Tom Ford's keenly discerning eye in every frame of this film. Colin Firth's heartbroken character's flawless modern home is a scene stealer, and the Hollywood Regency decor of the neighbor across the street (played by Julianne Moore) deserves an honorable mention.

Sleepless in Seattle (10th Anniversary Edition) - $6.27 [ Link ]
Best Houseboat: Sleepless in Seattle. We've never been so charmed by living on the water as in this romantic comedy. We'll take the views, the clean lines and the floating. It's a compelling setting for a single father raising his son.
by Amazon
Down with Love - $4.42 [ Link ]
Best Swinging-'60s Manhattan Pad: Down With Love. We have a tie between Renee Zellweger's character's feminine version and Ewan McGregor's character's masculine take on the style.

I saw a film the other day, the Ghostwriter with Ian McGregor and I realized I was more fascinated with the house than the movie.
Also Cameron Diaz's home in The Holiday is another great house that I really love
Most Nancy Meyers movies seem to feature very cool architecture.
Also I love Craftsman homes and it seems that is all you see in movies these days, they are the best for gathering that, "I want that home" feel. So I imagine there are many more homes that we all love than listed.
Under the Tuscan Sun, spot on.,. I also loved the home in The Other Sister, but it is not so attainable unless you have lots of cash. Which was also one of my favorite feel good movies and laugh out loud movies of all time too.

Also, Mad Men 60s inspired interiors!
I loved the booth style kitchen eating area with built in benches. Even a pregnant police officer looked comfortable eating breakfast there.
All those homes are gorgeous but I've always been particularly drawn to the kitchen in Practical Magic with its ivory cabinets, butcherblock counters, Aga range and large farmhouse table at its center.
There's just something about a historic kitchen even if its really part of a new set.
Also love the house in "Forces of Nature."
I was visiting Savannah GA on a motorcyle trip when the movie was being filmed. I had never heard of the book at that point and couldn't figure out why there was a whole neighbourhood decorated for Christmas in May...lol. I especially travelled there for the architcture and gardens which are simply stunning and walked the whole historic district taking photos of homes and gardens for days. I purchased a Bird Girl statue for my own garden where she is a lovely reminder of my time in Savannah.
Also...
I met a designer once who told me he as a child he was completely captivated by the layout and flow of Ellen Burstyn's Washington D.C. house in The Exorcist! Which goes to show what a good eye he had at a young age - to notice the decor amidst all the spewing bile and backwards-head-spinning and what not.
I think that house in Life As We Know It is about a mile from mine - they filmed that movie all over my neighborhood.
I'll throw in the house in "Christmas in Connecticut"- very similar.
I also ADORE Jonathan's Connecticut country house in "Pillow Talk" (hmmm I see a pattern here.)
If you want to see these movie houses in detail, go to this site......hookedonhouses.net
It's amazing, she even has floor plans from a few movie sets...lots of photos and backstories etc.
"Addams family", aunt Josephines house in "Lemony Snicket's a series of unfortunate events", "The city of lost children" and "the hotel Splendide." I couldn't find good pictures from the Hotel Splendide but here's a link to the trailer: Oh and anthing Tim Burton
I find it wierd because my personal style is very plastic pop - maybe I have a dark side I didn't know about?
I'd love to know what percentage are just sets. I recall they built the house for "The Housesitter" (which I mentioned in my ideabook about houses that star in movies as a character - see link above) in Concord, MA. It was just a temporary set they built and took down when production was done. It's always stuck out in my mind because they shot most of the movie in Cohasset, MA, which was the next town over from HIngham, MA, where I was living at the time. Big excitement having a movie shot nearby at the time!
I just read Becky Harris' comment about the House Sitter house. I'm soooo disappointed to learn that it wasn't an actual house, but was built for the movie and then torn down. Every time I watched the movie I dreamed about living in it and envied the family that probably did.
"The Pleasure of his Company" starring Fred Astaire & Debbie Reynolds (my moving van's ready!) Timeless and exquisite...
"What lies Beneath" starring Harrison Ford & Kim Basinger AND Kim's historic bachelorette cottage in "LA Confidential"
James Bond - M's London high rise and various offices are fabulous -
"What Women Want" starring Helen Hunt - her new flat is to die for!
I also loved Michael Caine's house in Children of Men...all those books. It was so cosy and a testament to lives well lived.
- The farmhouse in Babe
-bilbo's House! In Lord of the Rings
- all of rivendale in Lord of the Rings
- the apartment in Amelie
"The Holiday" 's home in England, OH MY Gosh, that cottage is so awesome. In fact all the houses in the movie are fantastic.
Hmmm, a tv list, that is a good idea. I just wish we could get permission for more photography! Right now I am still trying to figure out how Betty Draper moved into The Addams Family house on Mad Men. Of course, the Brady Bunch is one of the most iconic TV houses to me, the kitchen on Family Ties, the living room on The Cosby Show .... oh this would be fun! Thanks!
