Red

Stimulating shades of red have are purported to up the appetite, which makes it a great kitchen color for families who love to cook (and eat). But should you use a warm red or a cool red? And how much? Get plenty of paint samples before choosing a final tone — and be aware that red requires at least two coats for full coverage.

Orange

Like red, orange grabs the attention right away and is best used on great features that should be exaggerated. Be careful when playing with light tones, though — sometimes orange can feel like a pastel, so look for oranges with yellow or brown in them if you want something that isn't too vibrant.

Green

Green can be a tricky color to work with — while the right shades feel refreshing and playful, the wrong shades can look almost sickly. This guide has some great advice to get you started: Go for a hue that reminds you of your favorite green food.

Blue

This calming color can make even the most chaotic space feel relaxing. But be careful when using it in the kitchen, since blue may be an appetite suppressant. Instead of going overboard with this watery hue, try using it in small doses — on islands, cabinetry or backsplashes.

Black

There's a good reason black is always in style — it goes with everything. Neutral and colorful kitchens can both make use of this dramatic and dark color. But be careful — black absorbs a lot of light, so it might not be the best bet for a kitchen that doesn't get much sunshine.

Cabinet Colors

If a new wall color just isn't giving your kitchen the update you want, painting your cabinetry can be an affordable way to amp up your kitchen's style. But it's not just a matter of slapping on some paint — painting cabinets can be a lot of work, so be careful to choose a palette that you know you'll love.

Cabinet Stains

Torn between painting your wood cabinets or leaving them in their unadorned beauty? Luckily, there is a compromise. Staining your cabinets can add subtle color to your kitchen but still retain the texture and original wood grain.

Color Combinations

The good news: You've finally decided what color you want for your kitchen. The bad news: This is only the beginning. Take the time to choose accent colors, materials and the proper paint applications to create the perfect palette for your chosen hue.

Paul D'Amico - Period Design I think that the images of these colourful kitchens demonstrate that juxtaposing different colours works well. The contrasts insure the brighter or stronger colour doesn't dominate. There is a balance. I like the blue by Ecologic Studio, probably because it resonates with period and I'm a nostalgic dinosaur. On the other hand, I really like the last one too by Domiteaux+Baggett Architects and that's contemporary - Vanessa you have got me confused!

Dana Veach The grey stain on the cabinets in the Shelter Interiors selection is glorious. Clicking on the link for "Color Picks: Stain Colors for Kitchen Cabinets", however, takes me to a page that tells me that no such Ideabook exists. If it doesn't already exist, it would be a nice idea for an Ideabook...(Smile...) I'm starting one, as I speak!

in3interieur What a wonderful design the kitchen with blue island table: unexpected, fresh and modern. Just the right amount of blue! The otherwise traditional kitchen has become an inviting and exciting place to be in!

restorationcomedy Dana calls it stain but maybe she should search on 'pickling' for that sheer white/grey effect.

gaviotagal I was a coward when I picked the paint colors for our kitchen remodel a year ago. I wanted a deep chocolate with a rich beige. I know those colors are out there but the multi angled ceiling we have confused me and I went light and lighter, two beige colors. This entire spred of colorful kitchens inspired me. I just wish chocolate had been one of tHe pallette examples. Kudos to those brave with color. Your rewards are clearly demonstrated here.

davisbj Why oh why wasn't I more daring when I built my house? These kitchens are awesome. Love the orange contemporary. BUT, wow, the red & black is awesome.

blstrother If red stimulates appetite and blue suppresses it, and since most of us are trying to eat less not more, shouldn't the advice be to use blue? I also think it is a huge and obvious fallacy that blue is always calming and red is always stimulating -- it completely depends on the tone of the color and the amount of contrast in a room. A kitchen with brown wood floors and cabinets with a red backsplash would be drastically more cozy and calming than white cabinets with electric blue backsplash and black floors.

RED PEPPER KITCHEN+BATH If you love bright colors but are uncomfortable with a huge permanent commitment, you might try a bright backsplash that five years down the road could be changed. In the case of the attached photo, even the doors, drawer faces and end panels can be replaced without changing the cabinets or countertops. All of the perimeter cabinets are an enduring neutral. So be bold an know that for a small fraction of the total cost of the original remodel you can make changes later on.

mschubach The Domiteaux + Baggett kitchen is spectacular. The red and orange offset with the blonde wood and cool stone colors are dramatic and inviting. That, and the kitchen with the yellow cabinet work, are both great examples of great color work.

sassysueanne I'm not a fan of the bright colours. I have found from personal experience that you tend to get sick of them.

ifeomaduru Just recently I am falling in love with bright colors especially orange and bright green. Are these colors good ideas for painting the interior of a supermarket store - shelves and walls.
