Industrial bar stools welcome guests from the sunroom into the kitchen, adding a rustic design element to the room's farmhouse style. A pewter-toned bench sits below the kitchen window.

A corner island, recently painted olive green, faces the great room; an arched window has been cut out above the sink. The cabinets were previously black, and Kim painted them using a mix of Annie Sloan's Château Grey chalk paint, lacquer and Valspar's translucent glaze in Mocha. Kim and Doug added the tumbled marble backsplash and beadboard wallpaper.

Beadboard wallpaper: Lowe's; countertop: Giallo ornamental granite

The formal dining room is open to the foyer and connected to the kitchen. Natural wicker chairs, a beige jute rug and a linen-covered bench offer a warm invitation. Against the wall, antique china hangs over extra dining room chairs flanking a hutch that Kim repainted to achieve a layered, weathered look.

A few collectibles create a casual centerpiece.

Large arched walls open the dining room into the great room; vintage copper cake molds decorate the shared kitchen and dining area.

Last year the couple added a sunroom that connects to the kitchen and leads out to a back porch.

Wall paint: White Sand, Benjamin Moore; trim paint: Chantilly Lace, Benjamin Moore; couch: Pottery Barn

The sunroom is where Kim (shown here) spends most of her time, posting on her three-year-old blog, Savvy Southern Style.

Lamp: Restoration Hardware Outlet; chair: Overstock.com; grain sack pillows: Sutton Place Designs

Kim and Doug worked together to make the glass lamp above the TV cabinet. Kim found the demijohn for around $20 and bought the lamp kit for only $10. By doing it themselves, the couple made a beautiful glass lamp for a little less than $35.

Bailey the dog's toys are piled into an old Coke crate, and beadboard wallpaper gives the television cabinet a simple, stylish update.

The foyer showcases and sets the tone for Kim and Doug's style. An antique sideboard DIY project painted with a weathered treatment is alongside collections, like canes corraled in a metal wire basket.

Much of Kim's decorating inspiration comes from designer Charles Faudree and his love of mixing styles.

Connected by the foyer, the English room and formal living room stand adjacent to each other. The sitting room was turned into an English room with rich, warm hues inspired by many antique hunting prints. “I’ve always loved the equestrian hunt scene,” says Kim, “My dad had it in his house, and I loved that look."

Finding great pieces of furniture at bargain prices is key when Kim is shopping at antiques malls. The French vaisselier (china hutch) was her latest steal and sits adorned in silver trophies, vintage hardback books, and colorful plates.

Vaisselier: Queen of Hearts; wall art above vaisselier: Ethan Allen; wall paint: Roxbury Caramel, Benjamin Moore
by Corynne Pless
Kim recently re-covered the plush sofa with a soft brown fabric to complement the English theme. Bold printed throw pillows accessorize the couch, while antlers and prints line the wall. A French door opens into a back hallway, connecting to the guest bathroom and living room.

Kim utilized a tiny hallway space by adding a distressed dish rack. A metal basket holds antique books, while pitchers and plates sit paired on the shelves.

Lavender bushes in herb boxes, a mason jar soap dispenser and a wire basket turn this downstairs guest bathroom into a chic space.

Herb baskets: Farmhouse Wares: wall paint: Wythe Blue, Benjamin Moore

Natural colors, weathered antiques and taxidermy adorn the walls of the Nichols' spacious den.

Doug built the mantel above the fireplace, and Kim painted it with several layers of Annie Sloan's Château Grey chalk paint.

Wall paint: Roxbury Caramel, Benjamin Moore

Large windows bring warmth and light into the great room, brightening the colors and accessories.

Industrial lamp: Restoration Hardware; rug: Wayfair

Under the open stairway, a muted gray console table holds an array of Kim’s antique finds.

Antique miscellany fills a large glass jar, and vintage scissors and magnifying glasses highlight a vintage cup. Large demijohns and olive jars discreetly cover the air vent and fill the open space.

Bailey, the Nichols' Yorkie, guards Doug's favorite chair.

In the downstairs master bedroom, calm colors and quilted, tufted textures create a comfortable mood while colorful farm paintings offer cottage charm. Kim spray painted a stenciled "57" on an old wicker basket above the armoire as an easy DIY update.

Wall paint: Davenport Tan, Benjamin Moore; headboard: Home Decorators
by Corynne Pless
In the master bathroom, an antique family storage unit is painted seaweed green, and the open shelving displays red coral leaves and bathroom essentials. With limited counter space near the bathtub, a refinished stool holds towels without sacrificing space.

Santos doll: Home Goods

Each of the two upstairs bedrooms has a unique theme. This bedroom used to belong to the couple's son, and Kim describes the room's style as vintage nautical. Framed above the bed is Doug's Navy shirt. A vintage steamer trunk that Kim bought in the 1970s serves as a nightstand.

Sleigh bed and dresser: Rooms To Go; wall paint: Revere Pewter, Benjamin Moore
by Corynne Pless
A large red wardrobe painted by Kim in Emperor's Silk provides extra closet space. Framed to the left of the wardrobe is a vintage wool bathing suit Kim found on eBay.
by Corynne Pless
Across the hall, natural wood, distressed furniture and floral prints give the second guest bedroom a fresh look.

Wall paint: Dill Weed, Benjamin Moore

Next on the to-do list: new paint for the exterior, then a rest.

I live in a samll apartment after downsizing from a 2 story 3 bed home. Cleared out all but the most important collectables and still don't have hide away storage enough for the things I use every day.

yensi The overall result is nice, but i just find it to crowded in there. I personally like a cleaner space, it's asphyxiating the ecsessive amount of accessories all over the place. I couldn't imagine what it would be like dusting that house, very unpractical too much clutter. Yet the colors in the space are lovely and very unique furniture pieces.

patricia beharry Its a warm beautiful home. If animal heads and antlers is your thing, put in in your house and enjoy. Love your collectibles. It shows years of collecting the things that make you happy; one item at a time. It shows someone did not put this together with non-descript nonsense from a big box store. This is well done.

House Portraits By Kathleen Absolutely love your look, Kim, as well as all the Ballard Design pieces you used in your home. My question is, why didn't you give Ballard credit? With two Ballard Design Outlets near you, it's a shame, so many others could take advantage of the bargains there. No, I am not connected to Ballard, just addicted to their look!

gaillorene This looks confusing in style, and a little too busy for my taste. I like unfussy French farm houses, with sturdy furniture, white walls, a basket for fruit, etc. It's pretty, but surely not French farm house decor.

jdaley46 Please don't go nuts on this comment....but there is so much to be said for marble countertops compared to granite. Marble has been used in the old European kitchens for years. I have had it in two homes and it is wonderful and honed really adds a softness. I have never had problems with staining...just etching and I accept that over the look of granite any day of the week. The look is so much softer and much more to a "country" style. This is a lovely home which the owner has decorated passionately to suit her. Kudos.

Marilyn I love your home, and I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your home. I like French Country, too and have many collections, as well as lots of furniture, we have either inherited, or I have found in antique shops, etc. It was interesting seeing some of the comments about "it being too busy." I have heard that also from family and friend. My "stuff" is all in storage in four large storage units in Nashville awaiting our buying a house in Indianapolis. It was sad to sell our home that I have been working on since 2001. I cannot wait to get it all moved up here and start putting our home together again. Thanks for the inspiration. .

I must disagree with Oriah. Your home is not excessive! It is a reflection of your passion and style. You are an artist, and your home is your canvas! Like Monet, you choose a larger canvas! It's a perfect place to fill with family and friends.

I admire you and your husband's work ethic and your gracious attitude when sharing the talents of those around you in blogland. I can't tell you how honored I was the day you followed my blog!

heatherross123 Kim, I am a kiwi living in Australia and I laughed when you said you were replacing the sod, which I gather means grass, we call it turf here and if I was to say I was replacing the sod here people would think I was getting rid of my husband cause we use sod as a term of sarcasm towards an annoying person.....lol

South Bay Stone Kim...Your house is wonderful and I am getting sick of the negative people! I see so many large homes, and never once have I said, "Wow! this home is too big for the two of them!" Some of these people have large extended familys or simply entertain. I would assume if you are on this web site, you are driven by design and home! I would like to quote my Kindergarten teacher, "If you don't have anything nice to say...Don't say anything at all!"
BTW...I know Charles Faudree would LOVE everything you do!

Here is my buffet/ hutch thing. paid 50 bucks for it., its almost done...needs a coat of that chalk paint, and some wax,,and it will be finished. :) I have a coffee table that was found on the curbstone, ( set out for rubbish, but in really good shape) and I sent the Boyfriend back w/ the truck to fetch it,, ( couldn't find the photo of it, but will keep looking. I had that piece for a year before I " did something to it".lol ) so, I had to laugh when I read your section about Mr. Savvy asking what you were going to do with the other two pieces..; oh my. Shades of Shelby indeed. I am constantly finding things and when asked ' what are you going to do with it ..?" I reply pretty much as you did....' dont know yet. But just wait.....' :)

Kim Nichols Glad to know I'm not the only one painting just where ever. I need a work space. Beautiful pieces and I never find anything curbside around here.

pennie1111 I have been with you all day and there are only a few bad comments, mostly they are all positive Kim, no worries. I do agree with Anita, people could use some tact, or if they don't like it, move on! I am so thankful for people like you who put so much into your homes, take the time to share it with us and inspire us to try new things. We are not going to love everything but either way, be nice and appreciate the hard work!

geo55 Beautiful! It's amazing what she did with a newer house of this style. Usually, they look kinda tacky but not this one- she sure hit a home run! Love her french flair and interesting accessory placement.

chawad Simply adorable....I like it so much. Perfect harmony between colors and forms: house of spirit.

shelbybella Kim.. you are so cute. And thank you for the compliment ! Oh, its not too bad , for a price of 50 bucks.:) I hope one day that you are blessed with finding something perfect you..on the curbstone. There are times when I find stuff sitting on the side of the road. I even found a really neat chair, it was sitting out, by this trash can. So took it home, put it on the patio, steam cleaned it up and its the " dogs personal chair." .lol.Honestly..my kids will tell you! lol. Especially when I lived in Long Beach, Ca.; oh myyyyy..the things you would find in the alleys, and you can scoop them up and take them home...lots of that ' one mans trash...is another mans treasure'. yes indeed...:) ..But even here in Iowa...I have been fortunate.:)

str051458 Very warm and inviting. I love drapery with a three to one fullness , the two bedroom windows are needing at least two panels added to what is already there. Be careful with accents. French country is known for that eclectic relaxed look, just be careful. I have an eye for color, when color stops and goes in a room I find it over whelming. If its pleasing and brings you comfort than you have succeeded in your goal. Enjoy.

Perhaps you can call your French beach style "la plage" and then blog about it.

The house is not my favorite style but is very lovely and livable. Well done Kim and Douglas!

Nancy Reinke Kim, your home is so pretty. Every room is warm and inviting. The English room is exquisite. And I appreciate how you included a reference to your dad. Very loving. Love your home and your blog. I've stopped by at different times, but today I hit the "follow" button. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. Just love your style and your grace. Congratulations for being featured on Houzz. Well deserved. And kudos to Houzz for showing us a beautiful home and introducing a gracious lady.

go2mass Hello from the great state of Oklahoma! Anyone out there ever "wake up" and notice that your beloved home is stuck in a decorating craze from years ago? So my husband and I got off the latest craze wagon and decided to go with something timeless.......taste. French Country is it. Had a huge garage sale and working room by room. Our designer and bff, Linz, told me to check out houzz for inspiration. Kim, your home has so many ideas that we like and can actually create. We ordered two twist swivel stools for our kitchen. Most of all, I enjoy the feel of your home. However, I must admit, Bailey contributed a lot to this! My passion is fresh flowers in my rooms, wish there was an open market to daily walk through just to buy fresh flowers! Thank you for the "open house" and sharing your passion with us.

Manny's Interior Finishes This house is a example of how to use color effectively. Walls, floors and furniture in a variety of colors that are harmonious and beautifully soft (without being timid).

Nearly every shot features a beautiful lamp. Lamps give a hominess and personality to your home that I truly admire.

go2mass Manny Interiors, I have a question. Is it "old school" that all wood trim and anything connecting to trim, like a door, must be the same color. I noticed Kim had white colored trim and some black doors. That was a great look! If so, should the front and back of door be all same color? How did you and Kim know what contrasting colors would work? Hope it's ok to ask a ? on here, new to this. Thank you.

ruffslitch Your house is absolutely beautiful but it is depressing for me to look at since I will never have even a chance of duplicating a fraction of what you have done. How about more small homes? And I don't mean an original Craftsman in Buckhead. I wish Houzz would feature some shlubby little 1100 square foot number in an old no-name subdivision where people park their jon boats in the front yard, but that would be ugly and Houzz doesn't do ugly. I'm sorry to be such a downer on Easter weekend but I really think I should unsuscribe because all Houzz does is make me covetous. I wish Houzz would feature more budget-concious articles for people without gobs of money.

go2mass So in other words, you found this home absolutely stunning! A lot of the items in this home, by reading the article, wasn't with globs of money. They were flea market (cheap finds) with globs of "elbow grease". Houzz can't make you anything, you make yourself covetous. And houzz does do ugly, they posted your comment. Happy Easter!!!

Kim Nichols go2mass, I painted the doors dark brown after seeing this look somewhere else and liked it. The backside of the doors that face the inside of the rooms are still white. thank you

Nancy Reinke ruffslitch I can understand how you feel, but don't get discouraged. The more time you spend on Houzz and get to know some of the people that comment and post their own house dilemmas, the more you'll find that most are ordinary homeowners that meet here to get help and inspiration. I've learned a lot from others about saving money on everything from furniture, to kitchen sinks and appliances, and creating curb appeal on a budget. I doubt many people would spend time on any home web site, or subscribe to any magazine, that featured only "ugly". ;-) I think you know all this, but you were just having one of those moments when what you were viewing felt impossible to obtain. I would encourage you to make the most of what you do have and enjoy the process of making it your own slice of beauty. Make it fun and make friends along the way. Blessings.

hasnah I agree with both go2mass & Nancy Reinke - what makes Kim's (& hubby) talent for decorating so amazing is their eye for detail & DIY abilities among others. Their house is not one with expensive crystals or art that money can buy (but end up looking sterile!) but rather baskets, chickens, ceramics, little bowls, framed piece of nostalgic clothing plus so many beautiful items/mementoes which adds volumes of character to her home - it looks like a million bucks (or more!!) I LOVE this home & like many of you, am scrutinising Kim's photos for ideas we can use in our own home without spending a lot of money. I live in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Kim's home has all the ingredients I admire in a beautiful home that tells a story!! Happy holidays everyone!
