Thank you for your question. The ceiling here is a standard 8' high. The light fixture was custom selected/designed so that it would not hang into the walking area of this kitchen. Things were done here to give the illusion of a higher ceiling. See below for another, better image.

this is a porcelain tile that mimicks limestone. it has no name and was purchased in several sizes as a "stock" item for flooring that continued beyone this space. I purchased the tile from Apex tile in Parsippany new jersey. You can check the yellow pages and call them there.

It's not my pic, but that light looks like one from American Brass and Crystal, the Llydia collection. I'm looking at the same one (but bigger) for my dining room, it's beautiful in person.

Valspar's Soft Cream is a similar color.

jodi, I don't know the manufacturer of the tile, but it is a porcelain tile that is made to look like limestone. It retailed for about 6-8 dollars per square foot and came in multiple sizes. I used this throughout this house in the hallway, foyer and bathroom in different sizes. I purchased the tile through my distributor, Apex tile in Parsippany NJ. I use this tile store for all of my design projects because they have beautiful tile like this for a fair price. Sorry for not being able to provide any additional names. this room had a wall which separated the working part of the kitchen from the eating area. The wall appeared where you see the louvered door on the left. Once removed the room is not 11'-6" x 19'-0". Too narrow for an island. I hope that this helps.

I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen right now. My house is a 1920's center entrance colonial. We opted to go without the island. Too much expense to stuff it in there. It would have been small. It would have looked like a remodel. It would have been in my way. I agree with you. Do we all really need an island?? It's been sort of a nightmare remodel. I have been cabinet ready for 6 weeks and my cabinet maker won't tell me when he will deliver. any how- I will post pictures when we are done. We focused our budget on custom top of the line materials that were in keeping with the house, and improving flow by opening up arches to adjacent rooms, adding storage and efficiency- not a huge island open to a TV room. It just was not in the budget or the floor plan.

Carrie, who says that a kitchen has to have an island? If a kitchen is designed correctly and safely, aisles should be at least 36" wide and 39' is more desirable. That aisle number increases when two cooks are working in the same this. Having wide aisles makes for a much safer kitchen, especially when little children are present. Opting out of an island is choosing function and safety over the current fad. Good choice.

If I could, I would never have an island. A "U" shaped kitchen, with a big kitchen table in the middle fits my soul. Just like in the show, "The Waltons". The table is the heart of a kitchen in my mind.

Its not just about the "look" of an island that makes them wonderful. It is about the extra usable counterspace, however, in a narrow kitchen you can design so much more counter space using the "U" shape. The most important thing is the passage ways around the island. It can become hazardous in a kitchen if the aisles are not wide enough for someone to pass by. An example of this would be a child or someone in a wheel chair trying to get between an island and the open door of an oven. Be careful with islands. Make sure there is a comfortable 36" or more (39" even better, 42" best) In a two cook kitchen the aisles should be as wide as 48". Would macy's tell gimbles? Sorry for the vague answer. The fixture was a custom piece, designed and purchased through Interiors By Design. The company does not sell to the public but is a "trade only" company. In answer to your question, the fixture is an aged nickel with a champagne satin shade. It comes in flush mount as seen or pendant mount. It can be found through Interiors By Design, LLC. I hope this helps.

Hi Megan, thanks for your question. The tile backsplash was done in 3" x 6" beveled cut calacutta marble bricks. I had it installed like a subway tile. The inset niche over the range is made up of honey onyx mosaic tile. there is no honed limestone anywhere in the kitchen. It is not a practical stone to use in a kitchen that is a hard working kitchen. The floor tile which resembles limestone is actually a very fairly priced porcelain tile. No durango, no jerusalem and no honed anything.......I hope this helps.

Thanks to you both!! I was trying to decide on tile, and have selected a marble backsplash in honed varigated subway tiles also, along with a porcelain floor tile that resembles travertine. This room helped a lot, as did your comments!

Thanks for taking the time to review my kitchen picture and post your question. These semi-custom cabinets were painted with an olive green base paint and a khaki glaze. The color of the cabinetry was downplayed to allow the stone backsplash (calacutta marble) and countertop (white quartz natural stone) to make more of a statement.

Absolutely love the color scheme here. The cabinet color is gorgeous!!
