The client and I wanted to avoid an electric or manual retractable system. You have to store the awning when it is retracted and when it is closed one would be able to view it from above which is where all the main living spaces are located. The pros did not weigh the cons in this case. I am not opposed to retractable awnings, but we felt that in this situation, it would not be worth the effort.

Good point. The ones we use have the option of sitting either on top of or underneath the rafters... in this case, the under-rafter mounting seems like it would have been concealable next to the main rafter support beams.

This is VERY nice work, by the way. What is the material? Was it a kit like ours or built on-site?

We could have concealed it, but you still need to find a spot for the awning when retracted. We just didnt want to look at the housing for it. As you know, some of those housings can get quite large and this was a big trellis.

It is made of cypress and all of the components were built at a local millshop then assembled on site. It was a pretty interesting project and thank you for the compliment.

I should upload some images of a huge trellis that we designed that has a canvas top on it. It turned out pretty nice. I'm just not sure if I have any photos that show it clearly.

BTW, I think maybe we have a different understanding of the term "awning". The ones we spec most often are ShadFX systems... single monorail drive beam, fabric extended on wings, folds up flat at the end of the run. Some are 20 ft by 45 ft single sheets....

I think that if you were to visit the project you would see that the main living level of the home is 12' above the trellis as the home has a walk-out basement. Furthermore, you might notice that there are very few trees on the site so the client requested a space that would shade her from the summer sun. The lattice work is designed to block the summer sun and allow the occupant to use the space at all hours of the day. So, while it might look like overkill in this photo, the design really does accomplish a lot in context.
