Situated on a typical narrow Venice lot, this transformation of an existing residence required keeping the existing foundation intact. Restricted from adding significant square footage, the design focuses on volume and light. Existing interior walls were removed and the living and sleeping spaces were split by large pocketing doors and a long skylight, illuminating an art wall. The client, an amateur metal sculptor, was interested in combining mid-century modern design aesthetic with elements from his metal sculpture work. An open floor plan along with a warm COR-TEN rusted steel facade transformed this ordinary bungalow into a fitting addition to the eclectic Venice neighborhood.
